President Joe Biden has stepped into the fray, responding to the heightened unrest following pro-Palestinian demonstrations on college campuses across the U.S. amid ongoing Gaza conflict. Speaking from the White House, the president drew attention to the importance of respecting the right to peaceful protest while condemning acts of violence.
Biden emphasized on the fine balance between free speech and law enforcement, all the while highlighting that dissent is fundamental to democracy but should not lead to chaos or infringement of others' rights, ABC News reported. He also condemned acts of vandalism, intimidation and disruptions to campus activities, saying they are unacceptable forms of protest.
"In moments like this, there are always those who rush in to score political points. But this isn't a moment for politics. It's a moment for clarity. So let me be clear ... Violent protest is not protected. Peaceful protest is," Biden said.
He dismissed calls to deploy the National Guard to intervene in the protests, considering such action unnecessary at this time. Notwithstanding pressure from various quarters, he affirmed that the demonstrations have not prompted him to reconsider his policies in the Middle East, The Telegraph reported.
Meanwhile, The Hill outlined the broader political debate sparked by the President's stance, with former President Donald Trump criticizing him for what he considers as insufficient public engagement with the protests. However, Biden has remained steadfast in denouncing all forms of hate speech and violence, including antisemitism, Islamophobia and discrimination.
These protests, drawing national attention, remain a topic of discussion within the Biden administration and beyond.
