Biden Makes Inadvertent Pun About California Wildfires To Harris, Whose House Is Under Evacuation Order

President Joe Biden made an inadvertent pun on Thursday related to the wildfires engulfing Los Angeles while leading a briefing on the deteriorating situation. Passing the word to Vice President Kamala Harris, whose house in the area is under evacuation order, Biden said "I know you're directly affected so you fire away."

"No pun intended," Biden added after apparently realizing about the pun. "Indeed," Harris answered before moving on with the matter.

Harris, who hails from California, doesn't reside in her Los Angeles house while in office. However, her neighborhood was put under evacuation order on Wednesday. "She and the Second Gentleman are praying for the safety of their fellow Californians, the heroic first responders, and Secret Service personnel," said her press secretary, Ernie Apreza, on X.

At least 10 people have died in the fires and tens of thousands have had to evacuate as fires continue to engulf Los Angeles. Authorities said they were finally able to make progress regarding containment of the largest blazes, although they are still far away from being over.

Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said the Pailsades fire, the largest one, was 8% contained and the Eaton one was 3% as of Friday morning, the LA Times reported. "The region is in a much better posture than we were earlier this week," Marrone added. He said reinforcements and the ability to use aircraft aided their efforts, as they had been grounded due to heavy winds.

However, red flag warnings are expected on Monday so the fire department has three days to build up defenses.
