Biden endorsed Harris after dropping out, but AOC has warned there is no consensus within the party

President Joe Biden quickly endorsed his VP, Kamala Harris, after dropping out as candidate in the 2024 elections. However, while Harris has received other shows of support from Democrats since, it is not clear that the party will unanimously unite behind her.

Some figures are favoring holding a "mini primary" before the party's August convention, The Associated Press reported. Among those standing on this corner is Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who addressed the issue while it was still a possibility last week.

"If you think that there is consensus among the people who want Joe Biden to leave that they will support Kamala - Vice President Harris - you would be mistaken," she said on social media. "There's no safe option," added the lawmaker, who was among the few still staunchly supporting Biden before he dropped out.

The party has not made any announcements, but the Democratic National Committee's chair, Jaime Harrison, said in a statement that it would "undertake a transparent and orderly process" to select a candidate "who can defeat Donald Trump in November."

Harris holds a series of advantages, among them that she would be able to use the money already been raised for her ticket. That war chest started July with $240 million in cash on hand, compared to $285 million for Trump.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker have all been floated as presidential candidates, but they have not made any statements to that end so far.
