The Biden campaign responded to the Supreme Court's ruling on presidential immunity by reiterating their stance on former President Donald Trump's behavior following the 2020 election. A senior campaign adviser accused Trump of inciting a mob to overturn the election results, emphasizing that Trump's actions demonstrate a disregard for the rule of law and a thirst for power.
The campaign also criticized the Supreme Court, labeling it as 'conflicted and compromised' for its decision to grant presidents immunity for 'official acts.' They accused the court of enabling Trump to act with impunity, potentially paving the way for authoritarianism.
During a media call, former US Capitol police officer Harry Dunn, who was present during the January 6 Capitol attack, expressed concern over the ruling, stating that Trump remains a significant threat to democracy. Dunn asserted that Trump bears responsibility for the violence that occurred on January 6, alleging that the mob acted in his name and at his direction.
Additionally, New York Rep. Dan Goldman, who led the first impeachment against Trump, condemned the Supreme Court's decision, warning that it poses a severe threat to democracy. Goldman emphasized the importance of electing Joe Biden in the upcoming election to safeguard the democratic principles that have been upheld for centuries.
When asked about Biden's response to the ruling and his future public engagements, Quentin Fulks, Biden-Harris 2024 principal deputy campaign manager, indicated that there were no immediate plans for Biden to address the decision publicly or increase his public appearances following a recent debate performance that received criticism.
