Bibas family accuses Netanyahu of 'abandoning' Shiri and sons in Hamas captivity

The Bibas family has accused Benjamin Netanyahu of "abandoning" Shiri and her two young sons in a blistering attack on the Israeli prime minister.

Shiri Bibas was captured by Hamas militants on October 7, 2023 alongside her husband and two sons, aged just nine months and 4 years.

Yarden Bibas, the father, was released by Hamas on February 1, but the terrorist group claimed his wife and sons were killed in Israeli air strikes in November 2023.

Hamas returned their bodies to Israel on Thursday but later admitted they likely handed over the body of a different woman instead of Shiri.

Ofri Bibas, the aunt of Ariel and Kfir Bibas, said: "There is no forgiveness for abandoning them on October 7, and no forgiveness for abandoning them in captivity."

In a pointed remark aimed at Mr Netanyahu, she added: "We did not receive an apology from you in this painful moment".

Ismail al-Thawabteh, a senior Hamas official, claimed Ms Bibas's body may have been "mixed with other bodies under the rubble" following an alleged Israeli attack.

Israeli forensic experts confirmed the identities of the two young boys but revealed a Gazan woman's body had been provided instead of Ms Bibas.

Israel's military stated the two boys were killed by terrorists "in cold blood" with their "bare hands."

“Ariel and Kfir Bibas were murdered by terrorists in cold blood. The terrorists did not shoot the two young boys - they killed them with their bare hands. Afterwards, they committed horrific acts to cover up these atrocities,” military spokesman Daniel Hagari said in a televised statement.

He called on the world to condemn the “barbaric act of terror” comitted against the youngest Israeli hostages.

Mr Hagari added: “Our hearts go out to Yarden Bibas, Kfir and Ariel’s father and Shiri’s husband”, who was also taken captive on Oct 7 but released earlier this month.

Mr Netanyahu has urged the world to condemn what he described as their "horrific murders" and vowed that Hamas will "pay the full price".
