BHOPAL: A major fire erupted at shops in the subway at New Market late on Sunday night. No casualties were reported, nor was any one injured.
The flare fanned out from a closed garment shop, probably due to a short-circuit. Fortunately, some of the shops were still open. Locals informed cops and a fire tender was called for.
Till the cops reahed the spot, the fire had spread to two adjacent shops. Around a dozen fire tenders and tankers, including foam tenders rushed to the spot and began dousing the fire.
Heavy smoke billowing from the shops stretched through the subway. Cops broke opne the plastic shed above the subway to vent out the smoke. Finally, after four hours of frenetic efforts the firemen dosued the fire.
Later, district collector Avinash Lavaniya inspected the spot. On Monday, minister Vishwas Sarang visited the site. No police report has been filed. The damage caused by the fire was being assessed.
SHO TT Nagar Chain Singh Raghuwanshi said that cops received the information around 10.30pm. Cops rushed to the spot and broke open the shutter of the shop.
But the fire had already engulfed two adjoining shops. The fire was fully doused by around 2am.
