School authorities and parents are in contradiction over the circumstances under which Aditya Singh, 16-year-old student of class 11 in Delhi Public School, Bhopal, committed suicide on Tuesday. The student committed suicide after failing in mathematics and chemistry examinations in his school.
Principal DPS Bhopal Ajay Sharma claims that Aditya did not fail in the final aggregate which is considered for the next class. “Final Aggregate is declared today (Wednesday), in which he has got a supplementary in chemistry and he got grace marks in mathematics. We do give additional weightage to arts and crafts, music and sports activities. Aditya was in the school choir and was involved in music hence he did get additional marks for that. The child did not wait to see this, he had just seen the final terms paper in which he could not manage to pass in two subjects,” he said . The principal further added that the child was a bubbly student and did not show any signs of depression.
On the other hand Aditya’s mother Dr Aparna Singh alleges that school authorities are lying and has a totally different story to tell. “After returning from school that day he visited his class teacher’s house who also taught him chemistry. She told him he flunked in two exams, but never mentioned that he still had a chance in final aggregate. His friends told that he was crying. Seeing the condition of the child she should have at least counselled him or called us,” Dr Aparna said.
Aditya’s mother also claimed that the teacher did not respond to her texts which she sent at 1pm the same day asking about the possibilities of the result.
Aditya became very tense after he came to know that he had failed in maths exam, claims father
Dr. Mahendra Singh, father of Aditya, said that on February 17, Aditya came to know that he had failed in the mathematics examination after which he was very tense and told his friends that his admission would soon be discontinued because of poor performance. He thought so because there is a rule of the school in class 11 which enables the school administration to discontinue the admission of a student who performs poor in the class 11 examinations, Dr Singh added.
Parents say that they were called twice by the vice principal and had been told that if their child doesn’t perform, he will be given a TC as per the rules. However, the school administration denies any such rule.
Aditya couldn’t concentrate on studies as school wasted his time, says mother
Aditya was a well-known singer in the school and had also performed on various occasions. Talking to HT, his mother Dr. Aparna Singh claims that her child could not concentrate on studies as the school wasted his time and asked him to keep taking music sessions instead of sitting in the class. “Aditya was a very good singer and had reached in top 9 of Indian Idol junior and performed for the channel Big Magic”, said his mother.
