England’s senior players are helping their rookies block out the criticism that has come in the wake of their opening Six Nations defeat to Scotland.
Eddie Jones’ side were beaten 20-17 by Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday, despite leading 17-10 during the second-half.
England have come under fire in the wake of the loss and they are looking to bounce back this Sunday, when they travel to Rome to face Italy.
Jones has a young squad at his disposal, with injuries meaning the likes of Courtney Lawes will once again be absent, but senior players, like prop Joe Marler, are helping the rookies cope with the increased pressure of playing in a Six Nations.
“We’re aware of the interest and the history of the tournament and how the tradition is so great to be a part of,” said Marler.
“But we’re also trying to channel the energies of the guys, particularly the new guys, and there’s a lot of noise that you don’t necessarily need to take in.
“Be aware of the history of it and how important and enjoyable being a part of it is, but there’s also a lot of noise out there that will go: ‘England have just lost to Scotland, you’re the worst team in the world’.
“How do you then balance that with: ‘That’s not factually correct’. What do you want to work on this week, process, to make next week a win? [We’re] trying to get that perspective for the young guys to understand. It’s challenging but it’s good.”
