Bettor places one of largest reported wagers in NFL history on Eagles vs. Panthers

The Carolina Panthers can play the role of Scrooge on Sunday.

Per Doug Greenberg and David Purdum of ESPN, a bettor in Kentucky has placed a $3.1 million bet on Carolina’s Week 14 contest against the Philadelphia Eagles. The wager, which backs the host Eagles at -700 odds, is one of the largest bets ever reported on an NFL regular-season game.

If the Eagles defeat the Panthers, the bet would pay out at around $3.54 million—yielding an approximate win of $442,800. If they do not, well, the high roller will be out of the $3.1 million they placed with Circa Sports.

Derek Stevens, owner of Circa Sports, says it’s the largest bet the sportsbook has ever taken.

“I told my guys in the risk room to go to work and get some buyback on the Panthers,” Stevens said Friday, via ESPN. “With us being in five states now, we should have the liquidity to get enough buyback to where we end up needing the Eagles.”

Needless to say, this 10-win team vs. three-win team matchup has some higher stakes than your traditional 10-win team vs. three-win team matchup—particularly for one person in Kentucky.
