Bethnal Green shooting victim named as 'devastated' family seek answers

Detectives investigating a shooting in a Tower Hamlets park have named the murder victim as his “devastated” family seek “answers they deserve”.

Joshua McLean, 31, was shot dead in Weavers Fields, Wilmot Street, on Tuesday August 6.

A post mortem examination gave the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the chest.

Detective Chief Inspector Linda Bradley, who is leading the investigation, said: “We are grateful to all those who have contacted us so far and we are keen to hear from anyone else who may be able to help.

“Joshua’s family are understandably devastated and we need to get them the answers they deserve. If you can assist us with our enquiries, please do so – no piece of information is too small.”

Police were alerted by London Ambulance Service paramedics already on the scene and officers, including firearms units, and London’s Air Ambulance attended.

Weavers Fields

Weavers Fields is the largest open space in Tower Hamlets and popular with families attracted to its facilities including an adventure playground, football pitch and outdoor gym.

One resident told the Standard the shooting happened behind his home.

33-year-old Imtiaz Shams said: “I was coming back home and my friends messaged to say they heard five loud bangs.

“They were sure it was shots so I didn’t go through the park.”

Mr Shams came across a couple, including a woman crying, as he approached his home.

He explained: “They were taking care of each other. When I said ‘be careful there has been a shooting,’ they said ‘It was our friend’.”

Police have not made any arrests yet and said their enquiries are continuing.
