Arsenal and England have suffered a huge blow after it was confirmed that forward Beth Mead has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in her knee.

Mead suffered the injury during Arsenal’s WSL defeat by Manchester United on Saturday and is due to undergo surgery in the coming days.

At present, it is unclear how long she will be out for but both Arsenal and England will be hoping the forward can recover quickly, with a World Cup looming in July next year.

Mead has enjoyed a brilliant year, firing England to Euro 2020 glory and duly coming second in the Ballon d’Or award voting.

A statement from Arsenal read: “We can confirm that Beth Mead suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in our match against Manchester United at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

“Unfortunately, this means that Beth is set for an extended period on the sidelines. She will see a surgeon in the coming days, after which further details on timescales will be established.

"Everyone at the club will now be supporting Beth and working hard to get her back on the pitch as soon as possible.”
