Betfred's profits jumped as it raked in an extra £200m during its latest financial year, new documents have revealed.

The Warrington-headquartered company has posted pre-tax profits of £37.8m for the 12 months to September 25, 2022, up from £6m in the prior year.

The Done family, Betfred's billionaire owners, paid themselves a dividend of almost £51m in November 2021, although the company reported no further dividend payments for 2022.

The amounts wagered with Betfred during the year jumped from almost £7bn to £8.8bn. However, the total is lower than the £10.1bn bet in 2019, the year before the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the latest edition of the Sunday Times Rich List, Fred and Peter Done's fortune stands at £1.87bn, making them them the 93rd richest people in Britain.

Betfred's annual accounts, which have been published on Companies House, also show that the business closed 51 of its shops during the financial year.

Betfred was founded by brothers Fred and Peter Done in 1967 and opened its first betting shop in Ordsall, Salford.

Fred Done stepped down as Betfred's CEO in 2021, but he remains chairman.
