As the mercury drops we’re getting back into the swing of autumn/winter dressing again — and wool sweaters are firmly back in rotation.
But if you’ve discovered your cold season wardrobe is lacking in cosy knitwear, or you need an upgrade, we’ve done all the groundwork to find this season’s standout, statement knits as well as quality staples that will last the distance.
If you’re after a timeless sweater then look for classic crew or V-necklines and consider whether you want a slim option that is fitted close to the body, or is oversized and has a more androgynous feel. These will look chic over shirts and have cuffs that sit lower to the wrists for a more relaxed feel.
Pay close attention to the care label to ensure you’re getting a quality piece. A high concentration of wool is integral for warmth — though a tiny percentage of synthetic fabric means it’s less likely to bobble. You can’t beat cashmere in terms of warmth balanced with breathability — and while investing in a pure cashmere sweater from a specialist brand is definitely a decision you won’t regret, the high street does deliver well. Try Marks & Spencer and Uniqlo for affordable options. Merino is also high-quality and natural, and found in less expensive knits.
If more sustainable knits are your focus then Herd is the label to know. The beautiful sweaters are hand-made with wool from Yorkshire.
Another quality consideration when buying a knit is to look at the density of the stitching. More stitches generally mean it will be more durable and less likely to snag. Though too packed together stitches can be a sign the item is poorly made.
Navy, black and grey will always be a winner as smart neutrals. Though bold colour pops in your signature shade shouldn’t be overlooked — if you love a hue you’re likely to reach for it again and again, and you can always play it down with denim or black slacks.
As for what’s hot now: argyle (see Christian Dior), ski-style Fair Isle prints (Emilia Wickstead and No 21) and elaborate necklines (popular at Carven) all had major moments on the autumn/winter 2024 catwalks.
Khaki is shaping up to be a key shade of the season, while primary colours are having a moment as well. And if you can get your hands on one of the sweaters before they’re gone: the Bella Freud X Marks & Spencer collection is the must-have collaboration of the season with fun slogan knits in the cosiest of fits.
