If we’re being honest, winter isn’t the most enjoyable season for running.
Battling with the rain, wind and dark whilst racking up the miles is tough - especially if you’re training for a spring race. But, with the right kit - running jacket, winter trainers and tights included - the slightly arduous activity will become a whole lot more manageable.
Choosing the right jacket can be tricky. A balancing act of warmth, water resistance, breathability and comfort, each type of weather needs something different. Sub-zero temperatures call for insulated outerwear, whilst a downpour needs a fully waterproof fabric. For a touch of drizzle, you can get away with a lightweight DWR (durable water-repellent) treated design.
For Michael Dudley,â Product Line Manager of Apparelâ at ASICS, comfort is key: “A good winter running jacket needs to feel comfortable while shielding you from the cold. Even the slightest distraction can cause a runner to not find their flow which can result in frustration and even a bad run. These distractions can be anything from jammed zippers to feeling too cold or too warm. We aim to eliminate all distractions to allow all runners to focus on their run.”
When it comes to outerwear, the hardest part is making sure you don’t overheat whilst shielding from the elements. Look out for those crafted with targeted ventilation or fabrics that allow for airflow. Dudley explains how they do it at ASICS: “Our winter jackets include an elevated ventilation system that allows the runner’s body to thermo-regulate by using the easy-to-reach pullers which open adjustable back vents.”
He continues: “Our new winter jackets protect you from the elements because of the wind and water-repellent outer. At the same time, we use a sustainable oyster shell mix padding, which is placed strategically in different weights to keep you warm. Combined with our ventilation system that allows the runner’s body to thermo-regulate, we prevent any overheating and allow enough air flow where runners need it the most.”
Then, once you’ve got the fundamentals sorted, reflective accents, multiple pockets and quick-dry fabrics are a plus, too.
