Walls have a habit of getting mucky. From sticky toddler handprints and makeup smudges, to scuffs, muddy paws and more, there are a number of threats to a pristine white wall.
If you’ve ever tried to scrub a wall coated with classic paint, you’ll know that it can be a risky game. Often, you’ll end up making the situation worse by taking off the paint altogether, instead of simply wiping away a mark or stain.
Washable paint is a great option for those who want to avoid unmissable patchy touch-ups. Affordable, effective and readily available, washable paints are up for grabs in a variety of pigments to match your interiors and are stocked by recognisable brands including Wickes, Dulux and Johnstone’s.
What is washable paint?
Washable paint is a type of emulsion formulated so that it can be wiped or scrubbed to remove marks without damaging the existing paintwork. This makes it extra useful for home interiors and high-traffic areas which might need regular repainting due to wear and tear - think the kitchen, bathroom or kids’ play area.
What are the pros and cons of using washable paint?
Washable paint is a great option for those with busy households, but are there any downsides to picking the paint over any other type? Chris Moorhouse, Category Director of Timber, Building, Décor and Garden at Wickes, says: “Washable paint often comes at a slightly increased cost compared to standard emulsions; however, its durability means surfaces will remain fresher for longer when maintained with regular cleaning and so customers could save money in the long run, as it doesn’t need to be touched-up as frequently as non-washable paint.”
He continues: “ Available in a variety of finishes, high shine formulas will be easier to maintain while matt finishes require a little more TLC.”
What kind of paint is washable?
Glossy paint is the easiest to clean. A smoother surface equals a more effortless wipe, which makes a lot of sense. But if shine doesn’t feature on your interior moodboard, then there are new and improved washable paint options that come in flat finishes too.
- Satin, silk and eggshell: Satin, silk and eggshell paints promise a shinier, more polished look. They have a sheen of approximately 20 per cent and showcase a delicate glimmer to zhush up your walls. As they are so easy to clean, we’d recommend using them for communal areas such as kitchens or hallways where scuffing and splattering are more likely to occur.
- Matte: Matte surfaces are a popular pick. Typically smooth yet non-reflective with a sheen level of approximately 10 per cent, they are best suited to modern homes and can be used in any room.
- Chalky: Opt for a rustic touch with chalk paint that is ideal for countryside abodes. With a 2 per cent sheen level, they are better for older properties that would suit a matt finish.
