Best things to see and do in Windsor including royal highlights

Windsor never fails to be a hit with tourists thanks to its rich history, ties to the British royal family and its quintessentially British charm.

Amongst the cobbled streets you'll find quirky boutiques, cafés and bars, while visitors will have plenty to fill an itinerary whether through a visit to Windsor Castle or a day out at Legoland with the kids.

We take a look at the top things to see and do in Windsor whether you're after a day out or a weekend break...

1. Windsor Castle

Top of any itinerary should be a visit to Windsor Castle, one of the royal residences.

The Queen lives there for a month each year, usually from March through to April, but the rest of the time the castle tends to be open to the public, unless there are special events.

(It's worth double checking the dates you're planning to visit).

Highlights include the opulent State Apartments and Grand Reception room, as well as guided precinct tours.

Make sure to check out Queen Mary's Doll House too, built to be as exact as a replica of the castle as possible, filled with thousands of miniature items from the 1920s. (The kids will love it, even if they can't play with it).

2. Frogmore House

A picturesque retreat for royals, Frogmore House sits in the Home Park of Windsor Castle, and boasts some pretty spectacular gardens.

You'll have to admire the exterior from afar though, unless you book in to one of the three Charity Open Days each year.

It's worth noting that the tickets can be booked via the charities directly.

3. Legoland Windsor Resort

If you've got young kids, then chances are Legoland's already on the bucket list. Despite a reputation for being quite pricey it's surprisingly easy to find some great Legoland deals and cheap day tickets.

The family-friendly resort has plenty to offer with 55 rides tailored to everyone from toddlers to children, not to mention there are some great themed hotels if you want an overnight break such as the Castle Hotel.

4. Royal Windsor Horse Show

Anyone who loves all things horse riding will no doubt have the Royal Windsor Horse Show bookmarked in their calendar.

Expect plenty of show jumping, races and demonstrations - the Shetland Grand National and Musical Drive of the King’s Troop, Royal Horse Artillery are particular highlights.

Even the Queen, who famously loves horses, is known to make an appearance.

Oh and if you want more horse racing, the Ascot Racecourse is less than a half hour's drive away from Windsor.

5. Savill Garden

If you're looking to while away a few hours in a tranquil setting, then this ornamental garden might just fit the bill.

Set in the heart of the Windsor Great Park, the Savill Garden boasts pristine green lawns, rare plants, and exotic flowers that are bursting with vibrant colours.

It's part of 35 acres of interconnected gardens including the Summer Wood, Hidden Gardens and the New Zealand Garden - the ideal haven for anyone who loves all things nature.
