Best sea moss gels for boosting energy levels and digestive health

If you're diving into the world of wellness, you’ve likely encountered the rising star of superfoods: sea moss gel.

Renowned for its impressive nutrient profile and myriad health benefits, sea moss gel is swiftly becoming a staple with a wide range of health benefits.

What are the benefits of sea moss?

Dr Vijay Murthy, Functional Medicine Doctor & Co-Founder of Murthy Health on Harley Street says: "Sea moss is highly nutrient rich, containing vitamins and minerals including iodine, iron, magnesium, calcium, potassium, as well as vitamins A, C, E, K and B-complex.

The iodine content in sea moss can also support healthy thyroid function, with research highlighting the role of iodine in thyroid hormone production and metabolic regulation.

In addition, sea moss can be a wonderful digestive aid— its high fibre content can support overall digestion and improve gut health. Research has showcased how dietary fibre plays an important role in promoting healthy bowel movements and gut microbiota.

As its fibre content can promote a feeling of fullness, this may aid in healthy weight management too. Studies have shown that dietary fibre can help control appetite and support weight loss efforts.”

Who should take sea moss?

"Those with iodine deficiency may benefit from the natural iodine content found in sea moss,” advises Dr Murthy, adding: “as well as people looking to support their immune system, due to its high vitamin and mineral content. Individuals with digestive issues seeking to improve gut health may also reap its rewards.

However, people with diagnosed thyroid conditions should be wary, particularly those with hyperthyroidism, as excessive iodine can exacerbate the condition.

If you have a known allergy to seaweed or shellfish, it’s best to avoid sea moss to prevent any potential allergic reactions. It’s vital that pregnant or breastfeeding women consult with a healthcare provider before introducing sea moss supplements into their wellness regime."

What should I look for when choosing sea moss?

Opt for wild sea moss harvested from pristine, unpolluted waters. This guarantees a product that is free from harmful contaminants and rich in natural minerals. Wildcrafted sea moss boasts superior nutrient density compared to its pool-grown counterparts, making it a non-negotiable feature for any top-tier gel.

Pure sea moss gel should be just that: pure. Look for gels that contain only sea moss and water, with perhaps a hint of natural preservatives like lime juice. Avoid products laden with artificial additives, thickeners or fillers, which can dilute the nutritional potency and introduce unwanted chemicals into your diet.

"When applied topically, sea moss may also improve skin hydration and soothe skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis. There is evidence that topical applications of algae can have beneficial effects on skin hydration and barrier function,” says Dr Murthy.
