Best quarterbacks available in 2024 NFL Draft including next Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen

Almost the moment after the 2023 NFL Draft wrapped up 10 days ago, people had already started discussing next year's exciting class.

A number of teams even looked to trade out of the draft this year to move further picks in next year's, with the class said to be filled with much more talent than this years.

And while there are potential generational players on the defensive line (Dallas Turner), offensive line (Joe Alt), tight end (Brock Bowers) and wide receiver (Marvin Harrison Jr), all the attention will rightly be on the quarterbacks.

Last year's Heisman Trophy winner Caleb Williams will almost certainly be the man to go number one, with analysts stating that he would have even gone first overall in 2021 had he been eligible despite just one year of starting.

Here, Mirror Sport takes a look at the five quarterbacks who will enter the draft, their strengths and weaknesses and their NFL comparisons.

Caleb Williams beat this year's second overall pick CJ Stroud to the Heisman Trophy award and is seen by many as the best quarterback prospect to enter the league since Andrew Luck.

The University of Southern California quarterback is already being compared to Patrick Mahomes, and it's not too difficult to see why - some of the plays that he's capable of making are nothing short of incredible.

His ability to escape pressure and make perfect throws on the run are plays that not too many in NFL history can make. He's a prospect who quite literally has it all.

Drake Maye

The quarterback who many expect to go second overall, Maye's profile is almost identical to Buffalo Bills' Josh Allen - physically, athletically and in their quarterback attributes.

Like Allen, Maye has the capability to make all the throws and create plays that some quarterbacks even in the NFL could only dream of. He's also a big threat to run the ball, likely being the fastest quarterback in the draft despite his huge frame.

But, also like Allen, he needs to improve on his consistency as a passer - showing a lot of head-scratching decisions.

With Williams almost certainly going number one to whatever team has the pick, expect a host of teams to attempt to trade up for Maye.

Quinn Ewers

Quinn Ewers has the absolute perfect release when he throws the football - getting it out of his hands quickly with touch and showing incredible arm strength to push the ball downfield.

He's been compared to Aaron Rodgers due to his ability to make incredible throws off-platform while throwing off-balance and on the move. Ewers is quite clearly an extremely gifted passer.

But his big issues are consistency - with each play being a little bit of a rollercoaster. He could make a throw that some quarterbacks in the NFL could not make, and then miss a throw that looks incredibly simple.

Ewers will compete with Peyton Manning's nephew, highly-rated Arch Manning at Texas this season.

Michael Penix Jr

A slightly older prospect as he will be 24 years old when he enters the NFL, Penix Jr will be playing in his sixth college season in 2023 after spending four years with Indiana and one with Washington.

He might just be the most talented pure passer in the draft, showing the ability to make huge throws downfield into tight windows, while also getting the ball out quickly and accurately with anticipation, while also being mobile enough to make plays with his feet.

But although he's an older prospect, he still remains quite a raw prospect with much to work on - including his footwork when throwing the ball. He's also had a number of injuries in his career.

Penix Jr will become just the second lefty quarterback in the NFL along with Tua Tagovailoa.

Bo Nix

A mobile quarterback who has a quick release, Bo Nix performed well in his first season at Oregon after transferring from Auburn.

While being capable of making all the throws in the pocket, he's just as effective when running to throw - showing good instincts as a natural playmaker.

However, some of his decision-making when asked to play on-schedule has been poor, while also failing to recognise what the defense is doing to stop him, which can be seen when he takes sacks on blitz' that he probably should be seeing.
