Best puffer jackets brands, tested: Which labels win on style, warmth and price?

Perfect Moment - (Perfect Moment)

When the cold weather hits, there’s no denying it: the puffer jacket is the ultimate winter essential.

Whether you're getting ready for a snowy ski trip, tackling the unpredictable British weather, or simply after that effortlessly fashionable winter look, finding the right winter coat will keep you warm and comfortable all season long.

What to look for in a puffer jacket

The first thing I consider when buying a puffer jacket is insulation. Staying warm is the main goal, so I pay close attention to the materials used inside. Down is often the best option for warmth; it’s lightweight, incredibly insulating and compressible, which makes it ideal for layering.

But if I’m after something more water-resistant, synthetic insulation like Prima Loft offers warmth even when wet. For seriously cold temperatures, jackets from brands like Canada Goose are a solid choice. They combine high-quality down with excellent insulation that will keep you warm no matter how low the mercury drops.

Function versus style

Given the unpredictable weather we experience in the UK, weather resistance is a must. I always look for jackets with a waterproof exterior, sealed seams, and a hood to keep the rain and snow at bay. Windproof features are also key, especially on those windy days when the chill can cut through anything.

Helly Hansen is great for this; they’re known for their weatherproofing technology, ensuring that you stay dry and warm even when the conditions take a turn for the worse.

Of course, a puffer jacket needs to be functional, but I also want it to look good. I prefer jackets that fit well without feeling too bulky, and that have a design that can easily transition from outdoor adventures to casual outings. Holland and Cooper’s jackets have this great balance of performance and style; they’re ideal for everything from outdoor walks to dinner with friends.

For something a bit more relaxed, Sandbanks offers a coastal-inspired design that’s perfect for weekend escapes or a laid-back day in the city.

Choosing the right coat for the cold season can be tricky and an investment, so it’s worth taking your time to make the right decision. Which is why rental websites such as Hurr Collective are great to test out a few different styles, from brands like My Sunday Ski, for example.

How we tested

The ES Best Shopping team has had plenty of experience with puffer jackets, in settings ranging from ski breaks to simply returning to visit family back in chilly, yet charming Scotland. Over the years, we’ve put various brands to the test in different settings. I also spoke to Eoin Treacy, Northern Europe Regional marketing manager at Columbia the international outdoor brand for his advice.

He said: “Down insulation, made from the soft under feathers of ducks or geese, offers superior warmth and packability. If you’re braving extreme cold, down is your best bet. However, synthetic insulation has its perks too. It’s typically more affordable and performs better in wet conditions. Synthetic materials, like polyester, retain heat even when damp, making them ideal for unpredictable winter weather.”

A puffer jacket might look warm, but it won’t do much good if it soaks through, so the expert recommends jackets with a waterproof or water-resistant outer shell to keep moisture out. “Look for materials like waterproof breathable membrane or DWR (durable water repellent) coatings. When shopping for down jackets, pay attention to the fill power,” he said. “Fill power measures the loft of the down, with higher numbers indicating better insulation.”

To further help with your selection, we’ve rounded up some of our favourite brands that will see you through winter after winter.
