Best puddle suits for children to keep them warm and dry

Here in England we are known for our inconsistent weather, and whilst we may now be heading in the right direction towards summer, we’ve still got the many light showers of spring to get through first… and let’s face it, there will probably still be rain in summer - no matter how much we wish there wasn’t!

If you have kids, you’ll know how much they just love to get wet and mucky, thanks in no small part to a certain cartoon character who has made jumping in muddy puddles especially appealing, much to parents’ delight.

With this in mind, an absolute essential for all children is a puddlesuit. They’re lightweight, all in one waterproof suits that will keep mud and rain off even the nicest of outfits worn underneath.

That being said: it can be hard to find a puddlesuit that’s affordable, durable, beautiful and actually waterproof – take away the guesswork when shopping and opt for one of our favourite picks below.

Whether you’ve got a dinosaur lover, tree climber or bug explorer, we’ve found plenty of puddlesuits you’ll love.

Frugi Puddle Buster All In One

Lightweight and cosy, this puddlesuit has hit the mark as one of the very best puddlesuits for children – absolutely every box has been checked.

With thin fleece lining on the chest and hood, the Frugi Puddle Buster All in One is versatile for all weather, all year round. The hood features a cap to protect your child’s eyes from the sunlight of spring, and is elasticated at the sides to fit snug around their little face and keep them warm from any oncoming wind.

Elasticated cuffs and ankles keep mud and sand at bay, with fully adjustable and detachable foot stirrups to suit your preference. As a parent, the reflective bands on the arms and legs reassure you from a safety perspective, and your child’s comfort has definitely been considered with added extras such as a fleeced chin guard covering at the top of the zip and a placket to ensure the zip stays dry, even in the heaviest of downpours.

We love the floral patterning, but if florals aren’t your thing, the Puddle Buster also comes in a blue star pattern.

With a waterproof rating of 10,000HH, as well as being made with recycled plastic bottles, I can rest easy knowing the Frugi Puddle Buster All In One is a great choice for my family, and the planet, too.

Polarn O. Pyret Waterproof Shell Kids Overall

The stylish Polarn O. Pyret Waterproof Shell Kids Overall is a winner when it comes to a puddlesuit for children that is lightweight, flexible and highly adjustable. With BIONIC-FINISH® ECO water repellence resulting in impressive beading, the Polarn O. Pyret Waterproof Shell Kids Overall promises to be 100 per cent waterproof.

With stylish block patterning as well as a fully detachable hood and 3M™ Scotchlite™ reflector strips on the arms and ankles, your child is bound to look the part in this puddlesuit. There’s two popper pockets on the front as well as a small zip pocket on the chest for valuables (or snacks, if your child is anything like mine!). Thin fleece lining on the neck, chin guard and cuffs as well as breathable netting ensure maximum puddle jumping comfort, and the high abrasion resistance material means the inevitable tumbles and adventures of your child won’t wear this puddlesuit down too quickly.

To make the Polarn O. Pyret Waterproof Shell Kids Overall fit perfectly, there’s tab adjustment on the hood as well as an impressive hidden internal waist adjustment to allow for your growing child - it’s sure to grow with your child and will likely last years.

JoJo Maman Bébé Navy Dinosaur Pack-Away Waterproof All-In-One

This puddlesuit for children has a clever hidden pouch inside, so you can easily fold the puddlesuit in on itself and zip it into the little packet for ease of storage and transportation – it’s genius.

The puddlesuit itself is unlined, thin and flexible, with two front zips, elasticated waist, cuffs and ankles as well as adjustable and detachable foot stirrups. With reflective trim on the arms and hood as well as a cap on the hood and being made from 100 per cent recycled materials, this puddlesuit is bound to be a winner with parents and little dinosaur fans alike.

We love this puddlesuit for the ability to pack it away – a great choice to have in the car or the buggy whilst out and about in case of unexpected rainfall, or even to send your child in for nursery/school.

Tog24 Chiserley Kids Insulated Puddle Suit

Also available in camo print or navy, the Chiserley Kids Insulated Puddle Suit is fully fleece lined for ultimate warmth and comfort, making it a great choice for chillier areas of the UK or as a transitional winter piece.

This puddlesuit has everything you need: an elasticated and tab adjustable hood, elasticated waist, cuffs and ankles, as well as a top to bottom zip down one leg. Younger children might find these styles of zips a little bit tricky to put on themselves – so they’re not always the best option for nursery or pre-school attire – but parents will enjoy the speed and ease taking this puddlesuit off in the back of a car. I was also pleased to see reflective strips on the wrists and lower back of this puddlesuit for children, although I would have preferred if these were a little larger – after all, safety first!

Despite the fleece lined insulation of the Chiserley Kids Insulated Puddle Suit, it’s remarkably lightweight and allows for a full range of movement, so if you have a little gymnast at heart: this is a great choice.

Muddy Puddles Ecolight Puddle Suit

The Muddy Puddles Ecolight Puddle Suit is special because it’s jersey-lined (yep, jersey – not fleece!) meaning maximum comfort with no worries of your child getting too hot and sweaty if the sun comes out.

It’s extremely lightweight and flexible, and the elastic on the cuffs and hood is much thinner and more gentle than the others we tested, making this a great choice for those who may struggle with the sensory element of something tight around their wrists and head. There’s a large pocket on the front of the puddlesuit that is excellent for both collecting treasures whilst out on a woodland walk and bundling the puddlesuit inside itself for compact storage when not in use.

The outer layer is made from 100 per cent recycled polyester, and finished with BIONIC-FINISH ECO flourine free waterproof coating, making this puddlesuit impressively waterproof up to 10,000mm.

The Ecolight Puddle Suit is only available in bright happy colours – no plain Janes here. We love the Blue Happy design – it’s bright, unisex and covered in fun pictures and patterns.

Regatta Kids’ Mudplay III Waterproof Puddle Suit Jelly Bean Dinosaur

Perfect for dinosaur lovers, this puddlesuit will turn your child into a roaring, stomping triceratops. The light padding for insulation and thin fleecing on the chest and hood make this puddlesuit a great choice for slightly colder days. With elasticated waist, cuffs and ankles, the standout feature on the Regatta Mudplay III Waterproof Puddle Suit is the top to bottom zip that goes all the way down one leg, fully opening - making quick removal after a muddy (or in our case, sandy) adventure an absolute doddle.

From my pre-schooler’s point of view, this puddlesuit must be the absolute best thing in the world because he is opting to wear it every time we leave the house now – and then refusing to take it off once we get indoors. If my son is happy: I’m happy.

We would have preferred the reflective trim on the arms to be a little more prominent, but safety wise it’s definitely better than none at all.

Kidly Fleece Lined Puddle Suit

This fleece lined puddle suit is an excellent choice for colder, darker days. We absolutely love the thick reflective trim on the zip, running three-quarters of the way down the body of the suit – it’s great to see a puddlesuit for children that focuses on the visibility from the front of the puddlesuit, as opposed to only the back or arms.

The Kidly puddlesuit has all the other features you’d expect – elasticated cuffs, ankles, waist and hood, but unfortunately no foot stirrups on the older ages. It’s a simple puddlesuit that you won’t have to spend ages adjusting to fit your child – just pop it on and off they go. Waterproof up to 10,000mm, it’s an excellent no thrills, functional choice.

Dinoski Spike The Dinosaur Puddlesuit

Easily the most aesthetic of choice when it comes to puddlesuits for children, Spike The Dinosaur is bound to be popular with your child. The three triceratops horns are stuffed, making them stand up proud when worn – if your child likes fancy dress, this is the puddlesuit for them!

It’s incredibly lightweight and flexible, with the usual elasticated cuffs and ankles and detachable stirrups. We particularly liked the chunky rubber zip – it’s easy for little fingers to use, and anything that promotes independence is always a big yes from me. We of course have to mention the beautiful shade of mint green of this puddlesuit, as well as the cartoon character emblem too – they both make for one adorable little dinosaur!

It’s important to note that there are small holes under the arms of the puddlesuit – whilst this is great for breathability, it might not be ideal if your child likes to actually ‘go swimming’ in puddles….let’s face it. We’ve all been there.

Spike the Dinosaur comes with a drawstring bag, making it easy to transport once covered in mud. If dinosaurs aren’t hitting the mark for you, there are other characters to choose from including Sparkle the Unicorn and Hop the Bunny.

Toastie Here Comes The Sun Waterproof Puddlesuit

This attractive puddlesuit is another excellent choice for those who are both style and planet conscious, with the outer shell being made of 100 per cent recycled bottles. Waterproof up to 8,000mm and lined in a soft, breathable airtex mesh, the Here Comes The Sun Waterproof Puddlesuit is a fantastic year-round choice.

There’s two front zips, one extending lower than the other, for ease of getting on and off, as well as an elasticated hood, cuffs, waist and ankles – including adjustable and detachable foot stirrups. On the hood, you’ve got reflective trim detailing, a cap and two cute little ears.

We love the little pop fastening pocket on the chest (perfectly sized to carry home one special treasure!) as well as the look and feel of this lightweight, flexible puddlesuit for children.

Lindex FIX Waterproof Shell Overalls With Leopards

This stylish puddlesuit is great for mini fashionistas, but doesn’t compromise on quality. Albeit one of the lesser waterproof options at 2,000mm waterproof, the thicker material has BIONIC-FINISH® ECO finish, encouraging water to simply bead straight off the garment.

As well as the elasticated cuffs, waist and ankles – with foot stirrups - we love the detachable hood with elasticated sides and sturdy cap. Reflective 3M Scotchlite™ detailing, as well as the tab-fastened placket protecting the zip from the elements, are welcome extras. The thick material below the knees and on the back of the suit seem not only to prove for stylish block patterning but also offer an element of protection from falls, and with a fleece lined neck and chin guard, it’s obvious to me that the child’s comfort has been well considered with this puddlesuit.

Hippychick Toddler Waterproof Suit All-in-One

One of the more affordable options that doesn’t compromise on quality or comfort is the Hippychick Toddler Waterproof Suit All-in-One. Fully fleece lined, including the chin guard, this puddlesuit is unique in that it doesn’t have elasticated ankles – they’re tab adjustable instead.

Whilst at first glance this may seem counterintuitive for a puddlesuit, it’s actually brilliant as it allows the child the option to wear a more comfortable wide leg if they prefer. With further adjustable tabs on the waist and hood, this puddlesuit is another that will fit comfily as your child grows, and I always have to give a gold star to anything with a large, useable pocket.

Buy now £16.50, Kidly

Verdict

The Frugi Puddle Buster All In One ticks all the boxes when it comes to affordability, functionality and durability – it’s impressively waterproof as well as beautiful, and we are continually blown away with the quality even after multiple wears.

If you prefer a more monochromatic style, then the Polarn O. Pyret Waterproof Shell Kids Overall is also a great pick – the detachable hood, hidden internal waist adjustment and high abrasion resistance material really make this puddlesuit stand out from the others.
