'Best on the field' - Leeds United trio's player ratings from USA v Wales as Tyler Adams shines

A trio of Leeds United players were in action on Monday evening as Wales and the USA faced off against each other in their 1-1 World Cup draw.

Midfielders Tyler Adams and Brenden Aaronson turned out for the USA, while Leeds forward Daniel James, who is currently on-loan at Fulham, featured for Wales.

While the USA took the lead in the first half through Timothy Weah, Wales managed to respond late in the second half thanks to a Gareth Bale penalty.

Both Adams and James started for their respective nations, with Aaronson coming on off the bench for the USA in the 1-1 draw.

Here's how English, Welsh and American media outlets viewed the performances of the Leeds trio...

James 'struggled to make much of an impact'

WalesOnline gave forward Daniel James a 5/10 for his 45-minute performance against the USA.

James was substituted at half-time for Kieffer Moore, who fared much better against the American defence.

They said: "Wales tried to use his speed but he struggled to make much of an impact without the focal point of Kieffer Moore alongside him. Pulled at half-time for Moore to come on."

Adams 'never stopped'

While the MailOnline gave Daniel James a 6/10 for his 45 minute display, they gave USA captain Tyler Adams a 7.5/10.

They wrote: "Page's change of tack saw James sacrificed at half time and it was Moore's introduction which turned this match on its head.

"[Adams is] One of the Premier League's top distance coverers for Leeds and never stopped here. Professional solo performance at the heart of the USA's midfield."

Brenden Aaronson, who came on midway through the second half, was given a 6/10.

Aaronson's 'dynamic ability' praised

CBS hailed Tyler Adams as "the best player on the field" for his all-action performance against Wales, awarding him an 8/10.

On Adams they wrote: "The best player on the field. The captain was cool and composed. Always played smart, checking to the ball, instructing those around him, and leading by example.

"He had a late tackle on Bale that was quite impressive. He's the heart and soul of this team."

Brenden Aaronson was also given a strong 7/10 rating by CBS for his 24 minute cameo.

On Aaronson they wrote: "Just adds a bit of dynamic ability. His turns into space are superb, and he gave this team some juice it couldn't capitalize on. He probably should have gotten more than 24 minutes."

Adams attributes highlighted

NBC Sports also praised Tyler Adams for his range of passing against Wales in the Group B draw, giving the Leeds United midfielder a 7/10.

They wrote: "For as long as he’s been on the USMNT, the knock on Adams has always been that he is merely an average passer for the position he plays.

"Everything else that he does more than makes up for any shortcomings on the ball, but Leeds’ 23-year-old midfield engine was a long-range marksman on Monday, picking out more of the same diagonal balls and quickly switching the angle of attack.

"Wales’ two-man midfield of Ethan Ampadu and Aaron Ramsey simply couldn’t conjure any pressure on the ball given their numerical disadvantage."

Aaronson 'gave some much-needed energy'

While both Adams and Aaronson were only given 6/10's for their performances against Wales by ESPN, they did praise the Leeds United duo for their energetic displays.

On Adams they wrote: "Wales looked absolutely toothless in attack, doing nothing to trouble the US defense. Some of this was down to the Americans' suffocating midfield play through Tyler Adams as well as sharp and focused defending from Tim Ream."

And on Aaronson they added: "The timely introduction of Brenden Aaronson for a tiring Weston McKennie gave the US some much-needed energy in midfield. The switch titled the field back in their direction for a spell, but it wasn't enough."
