Simultaneously the best-loved and most-hated board game of all time, no tabletop activity elicits more euphoric joy and destructive despair than Monopoly.
According to a poll of 2,000 people conducted by Holiday Cottages, Monopoly has been voted the nation’s favourite ever game. The property-themed boardgame took home 51 per cent of the vote, while Scrabble had 36 per cent, Snakes and Ladders had 27 per cent, Connect 4 had 26 per cent and finally, Cluedo had 24 per cent.
Since its invention in 1935, "Rich Uncle" Pennybags has been the face of numerous iterations of the famous family game. From boards which are themed around iconic TV shows and movies, to a life-sized game on Tottenham Court Road, Hasbro Games has certainly made the most of the iconic empire-building game geared towards budding moguls.
Recently, however, Monopoly has garnered the attention of Hollywood’s childhood game-hopping movie producer, Margot Robbie. First came Barbie, followed by The Sims, then Minecraft and now, Robbie’s production company Lucky Chap is set to produce a Monopoly movie.
What exactly this film is set to entail, we couldn’t possibly guess. A high-stakes heist? The capture of Mr Monopoly? The story of the game’s invention by an out-of-work salesman during the Great Depression? Either way, we’re getting into the Monopoly spirit just thinking about it.
Stacks of board games were part of the furniture in many of our childhood homes. Yet as adults, we seem to neglect the purchase of such an essential form of entertainment. If, like us, you’ve developed an itch to play the relationship-testing game with friends and family but haven’t a board in sight, we’ve got you covered. Keep scrolling for the best Monopoly games on the market.
