Best mixed metal jewellery: Monica Vinader, Missoma and more

Silver or gold? It’s the age-old question asked by jewellery enthusiasts.

Typically, people stick to just one. Either they’ll be dedicated to the yellow glow of a golden gem or a devotee of the serene shine of silver.

Yet, your adornments need not be mutually exclusive. Gold and silver chime perfectly together when curated correctly and, in our humble opinion, convey even more personality and creative flair than a singular metal design.

Once deemed a fashion faux pas, mixing metals is now a symbol of expert self-styling. Hence its increasing popularity. Laura Suttie, Design Consultant and Gemologist at Queensmith confirms that layering mixed metals is a hit for summer: “By stacking up on simple chains and pendants, mixing precious metals and experimenting with different styles and lengths, you’re able to create looks that are both individual and fashionable.”

A handful of fashion veterans have delivered a masterclass in mixed metal styling. Suki Waterhouse and Mia Regan have worn mixed metal pieces by Missoma. Alexa Chung recently starred in Boucheron’s latest campaign which spotlights pieces crafted from yellow, white and pink gold. Dua Lipa appeared on the Jimmy Kimmel show wearing a constellation of silver-gold earrings. The list goes on.

So, how do you style mixed metal jewels? H.Samuel offers some advice: “The trick is to mix your metals in all different locations to give a balanced look. For example, it might look odd if you wear all gold earrings and necklaces, but your bracelets are silver. Instead, we recommend choosing a mix of silver and gold across all pieces, ensuring a balance across your entire look. Aim to mix naturally. There's no need to follow a pattern.”

Sporting mixed metal jewels is the ultimate fashion rule break - but rules are meant to be broken.
