Met Gala 2019 memes: The funniest GIFs and Twitter reactions to celebrities on the red carpet

There are a few moments in the year which unite the Internet in one singular goal: to drop the spiciest memes around.

Monday night's Met Gala was one of them. This year’s theme “camp” - after Susan Sontag’s seminal essay on the movement - had an extraordinary guest list including co-chairs Lady Gaga and Harry Styles.

Here's a few creative ways the Internet reacted to outfits on the red carpet.

Special mention: Jason Derulo “falling down the stairs”

Every year without fail, somebody will tweet that Jason Derulo has fallen down the stairs at the Met Gala.

The tweet will be accompanied by a comical set of pictures of a man - who is clearly not Jason Derulo - falling down a red staircase. The photos, which are actually of an as-yet unidentified man at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, has become part of an annual Internet conspiracy to fool people into thinking it was actually the pop singer.

The meme appears to have originated from this photo set in 2015, where a user tweeted out three photos accompanied by the words, “IM CRYING JASON DERULO JUST DIED.”

And it resurfaced in 2016 to the tune of over 6,000 retweets:

And in 2017 to nearly 9000 likes:

And then in 2018:

Derulo actually addressed the meme back in 2015, confirming that it was not actually him and that he was at “rehearsal in LA” (adding a “f*q y’all” to his message). Beyond the prank, the picture has also birthed a new meme thread of its own:
