Best job in UK as man paid £30K a year for 12-month pub crawl eating bar snacks

A man has landed the ' best job in the world ' - paying him £30,000-a-year to go on a 12-month pub crawl eating bar snacks.

The bloke, who goes by Garry, from Essex, fought off some serious competitors to land the role.

Thousands of other entrants - all called Gary or Garry - applied for the role of chief snack taster for McCain's Brew City.

Part of the job means that the 30-something-year-old will have to assess the quality of snacks across pubs in the UK and America.

The Essex lad will also be required to come up with new ideas for the firm's pub snack range.

Bosses at the Brew City firm said they only wanted a variation of 'Gary or Garry' to apply to promote their snacks - like Gary Lineker, the face of Walkers Crisps since 1994.

Initially, they tried to poach the Spurs and England legend from the crisp giants, but were unsuccessful in their task after being snubbed by the Match of the Day host himself.

Competitors took to Instagram to congratulate the Gary on his win, with one writing: "From one Gary to another - congrats!"

However, others have been left shocked that the one who won didn't have two 'r's' in his name, as one person said: "Noooo two R/s!? That's sacrilege!"

While a second added: "No! Not a Gary with 2 'r's'. Leave that for Larry, Barry, and Harry!"

A spokesman for the firm said this week that Garry - who wants to stay a 'bit anonymous' by not giving away his surname - was the 'perfect' person for the job.

He said: "The time has come for Brew City to officially announce Garry from Essex as their brand-new Chief Snacking Officer.

"Earlier this year, Brew City set out on a mission to tempt the crisp-loving, football legend Gary from Leicester away from the red, blue and green packets he has become synonymous with and back their proper hot cheesy bites instead.

"When that Gary couldn't be torn away from his beloved ready salted snacks, we decided to open applications to anyone named Gary to take on the role of Chief Snacking Officer."

He added: "The winning Garry from Essex was a cut above the rest and was a clear winner for our judges.

"Now, Garry will receive £30,000-a-year, and will be testing out snacks in pubs around the UK for the next year, as well as jetting off on a 'market research' trip to Boston to try all the beer and snacks the city has to offer."

There are believed to be around 250,000 people in the UK called Gary.

However, the name is plummeting in popularity - with just 17 babies born in the UK named Gary in 2019/20.
