Best friends on e-scooter hit wall and fall on pavement as birthday ride goes wrong

Two best friends have been filmed falling on a pavement after their e-scooter hit a wall during a night out.

Jenni Morley, from Nottingham, and some friends were celebrating a birthday when the incident happened - and luckily nobody was hurt.

The 31-year-old tried to cling to the back behind her friend Katie Green who was driving and then reached to hang on to the handle, which turned the accelerator and inadvertently sped them up.

In the video, the two friends can be seen losing control of the e-scooter before smashing into a wall and hitting the floor.

Jenni hit her head on the ground, but luckily was not seriously hurt. The woman then shared the video on social media, attracting millions of views and thousands of likes and comments.

She said: "We're always having a laugh every time we get together.

"I've not a clue [how we crashed]. My friend let go of the handle you control it with. I grabbed the handle to hold on [and] without realising at the time it sped it back up as my friend tried to stop the scooter and we were avoiding pedestrians.

"It just so happened that the camera was out at the same time. Katie [our friend who filmed from the sidelines] must have seen it coming."

She added: "There were no injuries at all. No medical requirements at all. Nobody was hurt."

Straight after falling, the two friends had to run to the station to catch a train and only after returning home and showing the clip to her husband Kieran, Jenni decided to publish it on social media.

Data published by the government shows that in 2021 there were 1,352 collisions involving e-scooters, compared to 460 in 2020.

There were 1,434 casualties in collisions involving e-scooters - including 10 e-scooter drivers who died - compared to 484 in 2020.

Government guidance says that anyone using an e-scooter should wear a cycle helped, even though this is not a legal requirement.

E-scooters can be used on roads and in cycle lanes, but should not be used on the pavement, the government adds.

Traffic signs with the following cycle symbol also apply to e-scooters, unless scooters are forbidden in that area.
