Best free half-term activities in Newcastle according to TripAdvisor

The half-term holidays can get expensive with the costs of days out and treats.

For parents on a budget or with multiple children to entertain over the February break, finding free days out for the family can be a struggle.

Thankfully, shoe retailer Clarks have done the hard-research for parents, and have trawled through TripAdvisor to find the best free days out in Newcastle in time for half-term.

The research analysed five star TripAdvisor reviews to discover the UK’s top-rated free days out for kids for a variety of nature, historical, cultural and educational themed days out.

Coming up at the top spot with 2,033 five star reviews was the city's picturesque Quayside.

Not only does the Quayside boast a amazing view of Newcastle's famous seven bridges, but there's also a host of restaurants, cafes and on select days street food markets on offer.

The Discovery Museum was voted in second place with an impressive 1,013 five star reviews.

Over the February half-term the museum will be open daily for guests to spread their wings and soar through the skies with the RAF Red Arrows flight simulator ride.

There's also a science maze which features a huge variety of interactive displays bringing science and engineering to life - with a shadow wall and air hockey table.

Dubbed Newcastle's 'green belt', Jesmond Dene came in third place for its natural beauty and family-friendly activities such as the park's petting zoo and cafe. The beauty spot racked up 862 five star reviews.

Grey Street was in fourth place with 790 five stars from happy shoppers.

Arguably the city's most iconic landmark, the Tyne Bridge, was voted as the fifth most popular free day out in Newcastle with 628 five star reviews.

One visitor wrote on TripAdvisor: "Instantly recognisable that you are in Newcastle when you see this bridge.

"One of many bridges along the Quayside, all very different in design and build. We walked past them all as hiked coast to coast over the summer. The many bridges are very photogenic."

The Great North Museum came in sixth place with 449 five star reviews.

One reviewer said: "Perfect size for kids and weary adults - enough to keep you entertained but not endless rooms.

"Great Roman info and layout, the most beautiful fossils I have seen and informative Egyptian section. Great natural history section esp. for kids. Sadly the medieval section was closed but would def come back to see that as well."

Over the half-term the museum will be hosting its very own family-friendly Science Fair in collaboration with Newcastle University.

There's topics ranging from epigenetics, where you can find out all about genes and why environmental factors alter how humans age and develop, to researching the Solar System in all its glory.

There is also a new exhibition on show called Where did all the Animals Go?, which features children's artwork in the Living Planet gallery, where hundreds of kids have drawn endangered animals using biro pens.

Historic hotspot Newcastle Cathedral received 340 five star reviews, followed by the Laing Art Gallery with 244. The museum which will be holding a playful Gallery Games Trail over the February half-term.

Kids are invited to collect a trail from the front desk, and make your way around the gallery to play games along the way. Play I-Spy with ‘ Isabella’ , Guess Who with Glenn Brown, or about Charades with the Bard.

Grainger Market has been a popular choice for locals and tourists for nearly 200 years, and comes in at ninth place on the charts with 215 five star reviews.

Bustling with vibrant market stalls which sell everything from essential grocery products to toys and gadgets, the indoor attraction is a true gem in the heart of the city - and completely free to visit.

Coming in at the 10th spot was historical landmark Grainger Town, where 40% of buildings in the area are listed as being of historical and architectural importance.

Much of the area was designed in the 1830s by the internationally renowned Richard Grainger. Grainger Town is the historic heart of Newcastle upon Tyne and includes Grainger Market, Theatre Royal, Grey Street, Grainger Street and Clayton Street.

One visitor wrote: "Grainger Town is a fantastic district of Newcastle that's just a joy to visit.

"Home to an extraordinary amount of grand buildings, the architectural styles are superb, Gothic, Victorian, Edwardian, Neo Classical, its just a fabulously place to stroll around, its the historic heart of Newcastle and thus is extremely popular, there is an abundance of pubs, bars and restaurants in this district of the city, we visited many fine establishments on our weeks holiday here, loved it here and when we are back in Newcastle again we will most certainly visit Grainger Town again."
