It shocks us every year that as soon as the supermarket shelves are cleared of Christmas decorations, Easter eggs are lined in their wake. Well, it’s certainly one way to combat the seasonal blues.
The placement of these chocolate goodies reminds all that while darker winter days are still here, spring is fast approaching.
In 2025, Good Friday will take place on April 18 with Easter Sunday on April 20. The bank holiday stretches until Monday 21 giving most workers four days of annual leave additional to our usual holiday allowance to feast – and if that isn’t reason alone to gorge on chocolate, we don’t know what is.
The tradition of gifting eggs has been practised for centuries – long before Christianity. It was done as part of a pagan ritual to celebrate the spring equinox as eggs were believed to symbolise new beginnings, rebirth and fertility. This tradition was conflated with Easter and passed through the generations. By the time it reached the Victorian era, egg gifts had evolved into cardboard constructions and intricately detailed designs.
Way back in 1873, the first hollow chocolate eggs were developed by British chocolatiers JS Fry & Sons before becoming popularised and mass-produced by John Cadbury two years later.
In the years since, brands have got more creative with their flavour combinations, designs and sheer variety. There are eggs at every price point, for kids, for adults, free-from alternatives for those with dietary restrictions, one-of-a-kind luxurious showstoppers or classic creations reproduced each year by stalwarts like Lindt and Hotel Chocolat.
But which Easter eggs deserve a place in this year’s line-up? Will you keep it classic with Cadbury’s and Nestle, or try something artisan from the shelves of Chococo or Love Cocoa? In 2025, why not put a luxury twist on the seasonal staple with Harvey Nichols or Venchi?
The ES Best Shopping team has sampled their way through the countless eggs on the market to curate an edit of the tastiest to brighten your Easter.
