Best compression shorts for men to wear in every type of workout

Most guys who exercise regularly should own a pair of compression shorts.

Whether you’re a committed runner or prefer a HIIT class, take part in a weekly five-a-side or lift weights at the gym, it’s an activewear staple for countless sports. Engineered using a stretchy fabric (usually a polyester and Spandex or elastane blend), they apply pressure on the glutes, quads and hamstrings which helps with performance and recovery. But how?

Let’s start with performance. When your muscles are compressed, blood flow is increased so essential nutrients are quickly sent where you need them most – especially during strenuous sessions. That means your muscles are quickly replenished for more effective exercise.

When it comes to recovery, there are many papers which suggest the benefits of compression. A report in the Journal of Sports Science concludes compression shorts reduce impact force and support joint movements, while a study in Sports Med suggests they help with strength-training recovery too.

They’re also great from a practical perspective. We all understand the benefits of keeping everything in, ahem, place, so wearing a pair of compression shorts will ensure your gym buddy avoids getting an accidental unsolicited eyeful.

The best designs will be moisture-wicking, breathable and mid-thigh length for the optimum balance between coverage and mobility. Optional extras include a rubber waistband to keep them in place and flatlock seams to avoid any chance of chafing. And, naturally, they should be super-tight – but never uncomfortably so.

Keep scrolling for the best compression shorts for men.
