Best clogs for women, the unlikely winter favourite that works all year round

The clog has been on a journey over the years.

From its humble beginnings as a Dutch workwear staple, designed to protect the feet of factory workers, farmers, and fishermen, to its heyday in the latter half of the twentieth century with fans that included Freddie Mercury, Sarah Jessica Parker, and ABBA, it’s a footwear design that’s experiencing yet another resurgence, having been spotted on the fashion show circuit regularly since spring/summer 2021.

The marmite of the shoe world, the slip-ons tend to have a divisive reception. But now, they’re back in the good books. Whether it’s a heeled style from Loeffler Randall or Celine’s timeless tan leather option, everyone from independent brands to luxury fashion houses have designed their own versions.

Traditionally crafted using wood, the classic clog is a chunky, solid design that you can usually hear clomping along from a mile off. Now, you can either stick to the long-established style from the likes of Hermès or Russell & Bromley, or you can go for a more contemporary 2023 twist, from cork Birkenstocks, which have become a perennial staple, to rubber Crocs, whom Balenciaga put firmly back on the map with its 2018 collaboration.

Although the open back usually cements them in a summer wardrobe, there are some which have been given a winter makeover thanks to a cosy, fluffy lining, whether it’s shearling, wool, or vegan friendly faux furs, meaning you can stay on trend all year round. When styling them up, they’re super versatile. From wide leg jeans to midi dresses, they’ll add a stylish twist to almost any outfit.

So keep scrolling to find your new favourite footwear that we’re sure you’ll be wearing for this season and beyond.
