Best boots forward into glorious mud

I totally agree with Phil Daoust’s belief that “The trick to staying fit” … is “making (exercise) fun” (Fun for ever! The simple way to build a fitness habit you’ll actually love, 9 February). I was delighted to see that he enjoys “just bloody walking”.

A few years ago, I joined my local rambling group in Bridgend, part of the Ramblers Association. I’ve met people of all ages and backgrounds, chatted about everything from different types of mud, to low politics (pick your own villain), to high art (Bruce Springsteen’s shows in Cardiff). I’ve marvelled at the agility of the fittest and extended a helping hand to those who needed it. I’ve never been bored and never felt a hint of competition. And I’ve lost just under 7kg. There are Ramblers groups all over the UK and anyone can try them out for free. Access really is that easy.
