Best beaches in Cyprus with golden sands and swim-friendly waters

Cyprus has everything you could want for dreamy beach holidays thanks to its golden sandy shores and swim-friendly azure waters, not to mention the picturesque coastal walks and beautiful bays.

While travel hasn't been on the cards over the last year, there's a glimmer of hope for holidaymakers as Cyprus has recently announced it would welcome back vaccinated Brits from May.

Paired with Boris Johnson announcing that England's lockdown roadmap could see foreign travel resume from May 17, it's enough to have us dreaming about a sun-filled beach getaway. (Not to mention the likes of TUI, Mirror Holidays, Loveholidays and Thomas Cook are already offering up some tempting deals).

For those with Cyprus on their wishlist, we've done the leg work and searched out some of the best beaches to have on your radar.

Check out our pick of the top 10 beaches below...

1. Aphrodite's Rock, Paphos

The legend goes that this beach was the birthplace of Roman goddess Aphrodite, with the large rock standing tall to mark the exact spot.

Climbing the rock itself is banned, but the surrounding sandy beach is ideal for a lazy beach day, although it's worth noting that on windier days the waters aren't always swim-friendly!

2. Governor's Beach, Limmasol

This beach predominantly consists of white rocks, but does have some stretches of sandy shores, so it's ideal for those who are after a scenic backdrop but not too fussed about laying out on the sands.

Foodies may also want to bookmark the region which has heaps of brilliant eateries just a short walk from the shore, and the nearby village of Pentakomo.

3. Coral Bay, Paphos

Coral Bay has always been a firm favourite with families thanks to the sandy beaches, beautiful views and the numerous boat trips on offer for adventures. (Not to mention there are plenty of facilities such as toilets and sunbeds nearby).

It's also a hit with those who want a bit of a vibrant atmosphere (pre-pandemic it was where you'd find plenty of bars and restaurants).

If you're after lunch with a view, one of the restaurants right by the harbour should do the trick!

4. Landa Beach, Ayia Napa

With plenty of sun beds lining the shores and turquoise, swim-friendly waters, it's no surprise that Landa Beach has always been a hit with tourists.

There are some facilities including a beach bar and sunloungers, but it's predominantly popular because it's a little quieter than other beaches so it can be ideal for families with younger children.

5. Makronissos Beach, Ayia Napa

Makronissos actually consists of two beach - the main shore and Western beach.

Because it's an easy bus ride from the centre of Ayia Napa it can be quite a popular spot for holidaymakers, especially as there are plenty of sunloungers, cafes and restaurants to be found.

The Western beach is a bit quieter and is less protected from the winds, so it tends to be a hit with surfers or those looking for a spot away from the main crowds.

6. Konnos Bay, Ayia Napa

Konnos Bay boasts some ridiculously beautiful turquoise waters, and if you're after a peaceful afternoon then there are plenty of boat trips which sail around the coast, for a laidback day out of sightseeing.

The beach itself has plenty of space, a surrounding forest for pretty views, and facilities including a restaurant, bar and toilets. (You can bring your own food and drink if you're sticking to a budget).

7. Nissi Beach, Ayia Napa

Nissi beach is one of the most famous beaches in Cyprus thanks to its handy location right by heaps of hotels, shops and attractions.

When there aren't pandemic restrictions in place, you'll find a vibrant atmosphere thanks to the countless restaurants and bars, not to mention the occasional beach party or two!

There's plenty of space for those who want to bask in the sunshine, while the clear waters lend themselves perfectly to swimming and a range of water sports.

8. Lara Beach, Paphos

The beach at Lara Bay is renowned for being home to green turtles, and between May and August it's where baby turtles hatch from their eggs and make their way into the ocean.

There are plenty of conservation efforts in the local area so it's well worth a visit if you're fascinated by all things nature.

It's worth noting that there are no sun loungers or attractions in the region, so it tends to be pretty quiet - ideal for those wanting a peaceful haven or planning to explore the rugged coast.

9. Pissouri Beach, Limassol

Those looking to explore rather than tan won't be disappointed here. Pissouri beach is right by a charming village where you can tuck into traditional Cypriot dishes.

The beach itself tends to be pretty quiet because, while it is sandy, it's also filled with pebbles so it's not ideal for families with young kids.

Meanwhile, water sports fans will find plenty on offer in the local centres.

10. Kourion Beach, Limassol

Kourion Beach does have stretches of sand on which to relax, but what tends to be a hit with tourists are the breathtaking cliffs that form the coast and make for a picturesque backdrop when you're taking a stroll along the shores.

It's also a stone's throw from a fascinating archaeological site for the history buffs out there!
