Best barn jackets for women to wear in autumn 2024

The barn jacket has been pegged as one of this season’s most popular outerwear trends.

A stalwart in the cold weather rotation of royals like the Princess of Wales, Princess Diana and Queen Elizabeth, the silhouette is defined by its utilitarian aesthetic with an eye-catching contrast shirt-style collar, boxy silhouette and front flap pockets.

Typically made from a weather-resistant and durable canvas or waxed cotton and lined for a snug layer, it was once the reserve for those engaging in outdoor pursuits such as farming, fishing, hunting or boating, but has since been adopted by fashion darlings. You can now spot the humble barn jacket as ubiquitously on your commute as you will in the British countryside.

Popping up on the spring/summer 2024 shows nestled among its corporate chic wear in neutral hues of black, green and tan at Prada and billowing with exaggerated pockets at Loewe, the high fashion houses have proven the versatility of the style as it appeared prolifically in the autumn/winter collections too.

Longchamp saw boxy cropped barn jackets in a classic camel tone, while it was beige at Patou, worn open and oversized. It was even featured at Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen’s fashion favourite The Row and on the most recent runways in vibrant hues of blue and pink during the Dior menswear spring/summer 2025 show. But while this has flung the silhouette to the spotlight, brands like Carhartt have quietly championed the workwear essential from the 1920s and its OG Michigan button-up has lined the wardrobe of well-dressed ladies and gents ever since.

Reinterpretations of the original have seen a shake-up of the design details. Once epitomised by corduroy collars and metal popper fastenings, fashion labels from Mango to Miu Miu have got creative with fit – whether oversized or cropped, quilting and fastenings to enhance the utilitarian feel and always add their logo plaques or embroidery.

Barbour Gunnerside paneled cotton-canvas, denim and corduroy jacket

Save for its vibrant collaborations, Barbour’s aesthetic leans towards the neutral ends of the design spectrum so when we saw the Gunnerside paneled jacket, we were intrigued. It retains the country charm that the brand is known for but breaks from the norm with a patchwork-like clash of denim, canvas and corduroy.

This is a duffle coat so there’s extra padding involved and the icing on the cake is the cord collar.

J Crew Long Barn Jacket in plaid

While you’ll typically find barn jackets at a regular or cropped cut, it is rarer to see longer iterations of the style, which typically fall into the trench category.
