Best and worst PFF grades from Jets’ Week 9 loss to Chargers

Monday night was an exercise in futility for the offense of the New York Jets, leading to a tough 27-6 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers to fall to 4-4. The defense certainly stepped up and did all they could to help the Jets but the offense obviously didn’t get the job done.

The grades from Pro Football Focus will certainly reflect how the game went down. There were a few good players but offense, but for the most part, it was average, at best.

We’ll take a look here and the best and worst grades on offense and defense for Week 9 for the Jets as the team reaches the halfway point of the season.

Best of the offense

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

1. Dalvin Cook 73.8
2. Breece Hall 71.6
3. Mekhi Becton 67.5
4. C.J. Uzomah 64.4
5. Michael Carter 64.1

PFF actually liked the rushing of Cook, giving him a 73.1 rushing grade, better than the 69.2 they gave Hall. But Hall was consistent and spread out with his grades being involved in all facets of the game, so it balances out.

Becton was the highest-graded blocker on the offensive line in both the run and pass on Monday for the Jets — 76.5 pass block, 52.5 run block, which gives you an idea what PFF thought of the run blocking overall Monday.

Worst of the offense

Brad Penner-USA TODAY Sports

1. Jeremy Ruckert 38.9
2. Laken Tomlinson 44.5
3. Max Mitchell 44.5
4. Billy Turner 50.0
5. Allen Lazard 50.2

This pretty much confirms what we saw on Monday. The offensive struggled mightily. Mitchell, at least based on his pass-blocking grade if 37.4, was awful. When 60% of your offensive line can’t help up in a game, you have problems.

Lazard had those key drops and penalties and is starting to become a liability as the No. 2 wide receiver. The lack of depth behind Garrett Wilson is starting to show.

For the record, Zach Wilson had a grade of 59.0.

Best of the defense

1. D.J. Reed 91.8
2. Sauce Gardner 81.7
3. Bryce Huff 80.5
4. C.J. Mosley 80.3
5. Will McDonald IV 77.5

The defense came to play once again on Monday. The secondary was outstanding again. Look at that gap too between Reed and Gardner. Reed had a 92.0 coverage grade, which is simply incredible.

If you’re wondering about Jermaine Johnson, he somehow got a 29.8 which helped bring his overall grade to a 66.9 despite being credited with nine pressures of Justin Herbert, so take that how you will.

Still, a great day for the defense after holding Herbert to under 200 yards passing and sacked him five times.

1. Brandin Echols 43.5
2. Jamien Sherwood 44.0
3. Tanzel Smart 44.5
4. Quinton Jefferson 46.4
5. Solomon Thomas 54.1

Basically, every Jet who played significant snaps had a solid contribution to the game Monday. Echols and Sherwood combined for five snaps Monday, though Echols was given a nice 72.5 tackling grade.

Simply put, the Jets defense was excellent yet again on Monday.
