Best whisky advent calendars of 2024 to count down the days with a tipple
Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7
Best for: Jack and Coke
The original – and some would say, best – bottle from the Jack Daniel’s distillery. Old No. 7, the core bottle, the quintessential bottle, the bottle with its own nickname (and a nickname under which all other American whiskies are inevitably lumped when someone orders at a bar): Jack.
Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 is a ubiquitous bottle and has become a benchmark for its peers precisely because of this ubiquity. It is most whiskey drinkers’ first whiskey, and a dependable back-bar staple due to its exemplary flavour profile – namely, caramel, vanilla, oak and a tinge of tight spice on the back of the throat.
Old No. 7 is a favourite for a reason, and an unassailable bread-and-butter whiskey for the backbar. You can do all sorts with it, but it’s an ideal for one partner in particular: Coca Cola.

Best Black Friday Tequila Deals 2024
Proper tequila - the kind without a worm languishing at the bottom of the bottle - can take months, sometimes years, to produce. While you can have it neat, there are also ways to enjoy it in cocktails, like a margarita.

Teremana Tequila Blanco
Star power: Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson
George Clooney’s not the only one with a taste for the tequila biz. Former wrestler and fellow Hollywood star Dwayne Johnson also has a piece of the action with Teremana Tequila, which won Gold for its Reposado expression and a lauded Master medal for its Blanco in the Tequila & Mezcal Masters competition 2022.
The small batch Blanco is suited to margarita-making as the agave is simmered in artisan copper stills, leaving behind a rich, smooth flavour that makes the cocktail sing. How does Johnson prefer it? Presumably on The Rocks (sorry).

Best Black Friday Vodka Deals 2024
This versatile spirit works just as well in a standalone vodka soda as it does mixed into cocktails or, if you’re branching out a little more, even into pasta (hello Penne alla Vodka).
Crystal Head Vodka
Star power: Dan Aykroyd
When you fancy a vodka martini, who you gonna call? Ghostbusters writer and actor Dan Aykroyd, of course. The star co-founded his vodka brand back in 2008, helping it stand out on the shelves in a transparent glass bottle shaped like a skull. Supposed to represent life (rather than the more obvious poison), it’s one of the most premium vodkas around, with different bottle colours - including a rainbow-splattered one for Pride (£50.90) - making them collector’s items.
The spirit is among the purest you’ll find, going through a quadruple distillation process and seven times filtration and made with Newfoundland water.

Grey Goose Premium French Vodka with Limited Edition Gift Tin

Ciroc Vodka
Abv: 40 per cent
Ciroc Vodka is one of the smoothest vodkas around and sits comfortably in the ‘premium’ category with a whole list of celebrity fans to match. Made from ‘snap frost’ grapes that are cold fermented before being distilled in a combination of steel and copper stills, it’s a little more refined than your average vodka and comes with a crisp, refreshing taste to match. Its grape foundation makes Ciroc a little fruitier than many others, which means it lends itself to subtle, fruity cocktails.

Belvedere Organic, Ultra-Premium Vodka
Abv: 40 per cent
Belvedere Pure Vodka uses one specific type of Polish rye to create its premium serve. A clean, crisp vodka that’s filtered enough times to avoid any kind of hangover (writer’s experience only: not - yet - scientifically proven), Belvedere Pure Vodka is just as untainted as its name suggests.
Smooth, sharp and gorgeous with tonic water, this 40 per cent ABV vodka deserves to be enjoyed on special occasions when you’re looking for a drop of something fancy.

Absolut Vodka
Abv: 40 per cent
Absolut is a bar-staple vodka because it really does tick all the boxes.
It’s not especially expensive on a per-litre basis. It’s a neutral vodka (with subtle hints of sweetness and black pepper), which means it works in a full range of long drinks.
It’s made using Swedish winter wheat, which is grown on one single estate in Southern Sweden and is sustainably sourced. Absolut may come in a full range of flavours but it’s hard to beat the OG.

When is Black Friday 2024?
Though the date shifts every year, the easiest way to remember is that it happens on the last Friday of November. This year the date to ringmark was Friday, November 29.
When does Black Friday end?
Most retailers will call time on deals on Cyber Monday; this year that is on December 2.
Why is it called Black Friday?
The event took root in midcentury America when stores threw huge sales after Thanksgiving.
Though we don’t know for certain where the term ‘Black Friday’ came from, some believe it’s down to the traffic fumes from families travelling to malls to shop. Others say it’s because the deals are so good your balance won’t go into the red (your overdraft). You’ll stay in the black.
Either way, it’s a catchy name that’s stuck. Now most stores in Western nations throw Black Friday sales, making it a global bonanza.
