Bertie Carvel to play Donald Trump in US election play

Bertie Carvel will play Donald Trump on stage in a new play set around the 2024 US election.

The actor, who is set to play Tony Blair in The Crown and has already played former Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg in TV drama Coalition, will appear in The 47th at the Old Vic.

The play, by Doctor Foster writer Mike Bartlett, will also star Tamara Tunie as Kamala Harris and Lydia Wilson as Ivanka Trump.

Old Vic artistic director Matthew Warchus said: “Mike Bartlett’s new play, The 47th, offers a provocative look at our not-too-distant future with equally hilarious and chilling consequences.

“Directed by Rupert Goold, Mike Bartlett’s zeitgeisty verse play shines a light on the 2024 presidential race – as he did for the coronation in his Olivier Award-winning play King Charles III.”

The show, which opens at the end of March. is part of a new season of work including a revival of August Wilson’s Jitney and the return of Jack Thorne’s adaptation of A Christmas Carol.

Mr Warchus said: “From the future to the past and the present, and wherever each production takes you, I hope that you will find The Old Vic continues to share evocative and impactful stories that provoke empathy, shed light and delight.

“It’s been hard being apart from audiences – thank you to those who have already ventured back, and we’re throwing our arms open to all those who we hope will visit soon.”
