Bernardo Silva identifies Man City's 'problem solver' as Erling Haaland chat revealed

Here are your Manchester City evening headlines on Saturday, March 4.

Bernardo Silva hails impact of City's 'problem solver' Foden

Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva was quick to praise Phil Foden after the Englishman scored again in the 2-0 victory over Newcastle United.

Foden got City off to the perfect start on Saturday afternoon giving the Blues an early lead. The 22-year-old showed he was full of confidence as he weaved through the Magpies' defence before his deflected effort evaded Nick Pope. City rode their luck at times and were fortunate that both Callum Wilson and Joelinton squandered opportunities to score. With just more than 20 minutes remaining Bernardo made the visitors pay.

Coming off the bench just moments earlier, the Portuguese midfielder fired home an impressive strike to put the game out of reach of the Champions League-chasing side. Post-match, Bernardo was asked about his City teammate and he was full of praise for him.

"He’s [Foden] so good," the City man told BT Sport. "He’s one of those players that can decide games for you, take on one or two players and then score a goal like today. Happy for him because he went through a difficult period because of his injury so he’s back and we’re very happy to have him with us because like today he showed that he can solve some of our problems."

Guardiola picks out telling Haaland moment in Man City win

Pep Guardiola said Erling Haaland was more interested in winning than scoring goals as Manchester City wrestled their way past Newcastle.

There were to be no goals for City's No.9 as he missed an excellent chance with a header in the first half, but otherwise it was an all-action performance that included an assist for Bernardo Silva, a number of scraps with opposition players, time-wasting at the end of the match with Jack Grealish, and plenty of teamwork to help the side to a 2-0 win. The smile on Haaland's face as he whipped up the crowd in injury time was telling.

Guardiola knows how important Haaland's goals will be, but only needed to see his reaction to the second team goal to be satisfied with his display. The manager confirmed he had a happy striker in the locker room despite the lack of individual goals.

"He made a brilliant assist and he fought a lot," said Guardiola. "He's a guy after the game in the locker room, he didn't score but we won and he is happy. Look at the way he celebrated the goal from Bernardo. Just take a look."
