At least one person has died and 30 injured after a car was driven into crowds in Berlin.
The vehicle crashed just outside a department store in Rankestrasse, Charlottenburg, in the German capital.
One image from the scene shows piles of chairs, tables and bikes destroyed in the collision.
German police have confirmed that the male suspect is now in custody, however no further information has been released, the Mirror reports.
It is still not yet known whether the crash was a deliberate act or road accident.
Authorities told Tages Spiegel : "We do not yet know whether it was an intentional act or a traffic accident.
"We arrested the driver and are clarifying the matter."
A spokesperson for the German capital's fire service told Reuters around 30 people were injured.
Doctor Who and Dancing on Ice star John Barrowman, who witnessed the incident, told his Twitter followers: "We think we have witnessed a terrorist attack here in Berlin we’re not sure there’s a lot of people dead bodies all over the place we’ve seen a car that came down the road and ended up in a storefront covering three city blocks it’s pretty horrific. #berlin."
In a video, Mr Barrowman described the situation as "really bad" and said he hid behind a tree to protect himself in case of another attack.
Describing the scene, he said there was a huge emergency response and said he could see a dead person laying in the middle of the street.
In another update 15 minutes later, he said he saw "multiple fatalities".
"A man is believed to have driven into a group of people. It is not yet known whether it was an accident or a deliberate act," police said, adding that he was being held at the scene.
The incident took place near the scene of a fatal attack in 2016 when Anis Amri, a failed Tunisian asylum seeker with Islamist links, hijacked a truck, killed the driver and then plowed it into a crowded western Berlin Christmas market, killing 11 more people and injuring dozens of others.
The 24-year-old had been asked to show his identity documents by police before pulling out a pistol who then returned fire hitting the suspect in the chest.
Security officials later confirmed "without any shadow of a doubt" that the dead man is Amri after identifying him using his fingerprints.
