Berlanga Calls WBA Champ Morrell ‘Soft’ Amid Title Challenge Drama

Edgar Berlanga claims that David Morrell, the WBA “regular” super middleweight champion, is “soft” and that he would let him know if he saw him.

Given that Berlanga declined to challenge Morrell (10-0, 9 KOs) for the title after defeating Padraig McCrory to become his mandatory challenger for the WBA, fans find his remarks intriguing. Berlanga made a poor impression by declining to challenge Morrell for the title. Supporters believe Berlanga simply sidestepped Morrell and is after the Canelo Alvarez money.

“He’s soft and I’ll tell him to his face,” said Edgar Berlanga in media reports.

“In my last last fight, I seen a video where he was talking some mess about how he was going to knock me out,” he added.

The majority of people think that Morrell, a talented Cuban, could easily defeat Berlanga and stop him in four rounds. Berlanga, who is 26 years old, has a poor record full with hostility from the top down. In an attempt to inflate the buzz around his career, Berlanga’s previous promoters at Top Rank pitted him against 16 unimpressive opponents, all of whom he easily defeated via first-round knockouts.

“I am not interested in fighting Morrell because he can’t sell tickets and is not well known,”said Berlanga.

The Brooklyn, New York native Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs), sponsored by Matchroom, is more focused on winning bouts versus Canelo Alvarez. Morrell is anticipated to give up his WBA 168-lb championship, in which case Berlanga will become Canelo’s mandatory for that title with that organization. Though he has never faced a good opponent in his career, Canelo may face Berlanga in September and earn a lot of money from the bout.

His Excellency Turki Alalshikh should ideally insist that Berlanga fight Morrell in order to advance to the Canelo fight, as that would provide for a more intriguing elimination-style scenario. Since Morrell is essentially a better version of David Benavidez, Canelo probably wouldn’t agree to fight him, but it would be preferable if Berlanga had to earn the fight against the Mexican superstar rather than having it handed to him due of his fame in Brooklyn, New York.
