Bergkamp, Henry, Sanchez: Arsenal's top 10 transfers of the Premier League era

Arsenal made some inspired signings this summer. Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko in particular have proved to be astute additions from Manchester City.

As with every club, Arsenal have had some hits and misses in the transfer market in the past. But who have been some of the best?

We’ve picked out our top 10 Arsenal signings from the last 30 years. Let us know who you would pick using our widget in the article below.

Freddie Ljungberg

The former Sweden international enjoyed a nine-year spell at Arsenal. Ljungberg signed for the Gunners in 1998 for £3 million from Halmstad after Arsenal scouts had been keeping tabs on him for over a year.

The winger scored on his Gunners debut, coming off the bench to net in a 3-0 win over Manchester United, and he never looked back. In total at Arsenal, he scored 72 goals and provided 37 assists in 372 games.

He played an integral role in helping Arsenal win two Premier Leagues, three FA Cups and reach a Champions League final. His most productive season in an Arsenal shirt came in the 2004/05 campaign, where he provided double figures in both goals and assists.

Dennis Bergkamp

Arsenal broke their transfer record to sign Bergkamp from Inter Milan in 1995. He was Bruce Rioch's first ever signing at the club and proved to be by far his best.

The Dutchman stayed in north London for 11 years, accumulating 416 appearances in that time. He scored 115 goals and provided 95 assists as he won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups.

Surprisingly, he was only named in the PFA team of the year once.

Thierry Henry

Arguably Arsenal's greatest ever player, there was no way Henry wasn't going to be included on this list. The Frenchman was the star figure in the Gunners' invincible side.

Eyebrows were raised when Wenger signed him for £11 million from Juventus, but the fee proved to be a bargain. He didn't need time to settle, scoring 17 goals during his first season in English football.

17 goals is a good return for any striker in the Premier League, but that actually proved to be Henry's second lowest total during his eight full seasons at Arsenal. He scored 30 league goals during the invincible season of 2003/04, while he had 49 goal contributions in 37 games in the previous campaign. A true Arsenal legend.

Robin van Persie

There may still be some bitterness among Gunners supporters that Van Persie left Arsenal to join a direct rival, but nobody can argue against the impact he had during his time with the club. Arsene Wenger took a chance on the forward when he joined as a 21-year-old in 2004, but Arsenal reaped the rewards for taking the risk.

He arrived in north London as a left winger, but Wenger converted him into a prolific striker. He was mostly limited to substitute appearances upon his arrival, but soon became Arsenal's talisman after Henry left to join Barcelona.

The Dutchman scored 132 goals in 278 appearances for Arsenal, netting an outstanding 37 goals in all competitions in his final season at the Emirates Stadium. He controversially joined Manchester United in 2012, where he won his first Premier League title and scored three goals in his six meetings against his old club.

Alexis Sanchez

The most recent Arsenal player on this list, Sanchez was a marquee signing when he joined the Gunners in 2014. Arriving from Barcelona, Sanchez was a real statement addition having scored 21 goals for the La Liga giants the previous season.

The Chilean didn't disappoint, scoring 13 league goals or more in three of his four seasons in north London. He was the star player in an Arsenal side that won two FA Cups during his time at the club.

Sanchez claimed 24 goal contributions in his first season in the Premier League, before hitting 24 goals and 11 assists in the league in 2016/17 campaign. At his explosive best, Sanchez was arguably the best player in England during this period, but injury problems meant his last season at Arsenal was a frustrating one. Like Van Persie, Sanchez left Arsenal to join Man United.

Sol Campbell

Sanchez's move to United may have been controversial, but it had nothing on Campbell's switch from Tottenham to Arsenal in 2001. Ultimately though, Campbell's move proved to be a success on a personal level, as he won five major trophies during his time with the Gunners.

Campbell formed centre-back partnerships with Tony Adams, Martin Keown and Kolo Toure during his time at the club - with the latter playing alongside Campbell during the invincible campaign. He was named in the PFA team of the season for two consecutive years while at Arsenal.

The defender scored 12 goals in 211 Gunners appearances - with one of those coming against Barcelona in the 2006 Champions League final defeat.

Patrick Vieira

Arsenal nipped in ahead of Ajax to sign a 20-year-old Vieira in 1996 for a fee of £3.5 million. He was one of Wenger's first signings and one of his main reasons for joining was to work under the Frenchman.

The now Crystal Palace boss racked up 400 appearances for Arsenal over a nine-year stint. He became the Gunners' captain in 2002 and relished the responsibility.

Vieira was Arsenal's leader and figurehead during the invincible campaign, but he signed for Juventus in 2005 for a fee in the region of £13.5 million.

Nicolas Anelka

The Frenchman had an illustrious Premier League career, but his time in England started at Arsenal. The Gunners signed him for just £500,000 as a 17-year-old, with Wenger a big fan of the player.

In his first season, the forward claimed six goals and six assists in 26 appearances and was a key member of the squad that won both the Premier League and FA Cup that season - with Anelka scoring against Newcastle United in the final.

In the following campaign, he scored 17 goals and was voted PFA young player of the season for his efforts. However, transfer speculation overshadowed the latter stages of his time at Arsenal and he moved to Real Madrid in 1999, sold for £22 million more than he was signed for two years earlier.

Cesc Fabregas

Joining as a 16-year-old, Fabregas is another fine example of Arsenal reaping the rewards for taking a chance on young talent. His quality was so obvious that he came the Gunners' youngest-ever player at 16 years and 177 days, a record now held by Ethan Nwaneri.

Fabregas was handed regular first-team chances once Vieira left in 2005. At Arsenal, the Spaniard grew from a teenager trying to make his way into the professional game, to the club captain and one of the mostly highly-rated midfielders in the world.

He made over 300 appearances for Arsenal, and only Ryan Giggs has provided more assists than the midfielder's 111 in Premier League history. He was named in the Premier League team of the season twice and UEFA's team of the year twice during his time at Arsenal.

Jens Lehmann

It was going to take somebody special to replace the void left by David Seaman when he left Arsenal, but Lehmann stepped up to the task. Signed in 2003, he didn't taste defeat in his first season in the Premier League and conceded just 26 goals in 38 games.

Lehmann played 200 times for Arsenal and let in 168 goals - conceding an average of 0.84 per game. He also kept 80 clean sheets during his time in north London.

The German goalkeeper crucially saved Paul Scholes' penalty in the FA Cup final penalty shootout win over Man United in 2005, while he was named Champions League Goalkeeper of the Year for the 2005–06 season.
