A significant number of students from Bennett College were in attendance at Vice President Kamala Harris' rally in Greensboro on Friday evening. Bennett College is one of nearly a dozen historically Black Colleges and Universities in North Carolina, with the campaign actively reaching out to engage with these institutions.
Vice President Harris, an alumna of Howard University, recently penned an open letter calling for action from students at these colleges, emphasizing the importance of their vote. The letter stressed that their vote has never been more crucial.
Bennett College stands out as one of only two all-women historically Black colleges in the United States, with Spelman College in Georgia being the other. Jasmine Rawls, a proud Bennett Belle and first-time voter, had the honor of introducing Vice President Harris at the rally. Rawls expressed her excitement about casting her vote for candidates who are advocating for a new path forward.
One student, Kamiyah McDowell, who is studying elementary education, shared her feelings of anxiety while watching the recent debate as both a college student and a Black woman. McDowell expressed concerns about the potential reactions of the public to the election results, particularly in light of the events of January 6, 2021, at the Capitol.
Reflecting on the past, McDowell expressed hope that society has learned from such incidents and can move forward by bridging differences and growing as a united community. She emphasized the importance of coming together and overcoming divisions for the betterment of all.
