Benjamin Siegrist in Celtic transfer tug of war as Rangers urged to join signing race amid Allan McGregor doubt

Rangers should make a bid to land Benjamin Siegrist amid interest from Celtic, insists Kenny Miller.

Record Sport understands Hoops chiefs have made contact with the Swiss stopper’s representatives and are looking to add the 30-year-old as Joe Hart’s back up.

Siegirst is set to leave Dundee United at the end of his contract, bringing to a close a four year spell at Tannadice.

But Miller reckons Rangers should be in the mix for his signature this summer.

Ibrox number one Allan McGregor has still to agree a new contract with the club leaving Jon McLaughlin and Robby McCrorie as the two first-team goalkeepers on the books.

And Miller reckons Celtic's bid should be derailed by their city rivals.

He told Clyde 1 SSB: "I think it's a good option on a free transfer.

"I think it was mooted last summer that they (Celtic) were going to go for Siegrist as a potential number one, and obviously they went and got Joe Hart.

"He has been an outstanding performer in the league for a few seasons now.

"On a free transfer it would be very good business, and we don't know what's going on with (Allan) McGregor. Rangers or a Celtic should be looking at him on a free transfer. Absolutely."

He reckons Siegrist will be viewed as an understudy to England cap Hart at Celtic Park if he does make the move to Glasgow's east end.

Miller went on: 'It might be a case that he works with a keeper of his quality (Joe Hart) for a season.

"The one thing when you come to a Rangers or a Celtic from a smaller club in Scotland, a Hearts, a Hibs or a Dundee United, you need to move again.

"You need to move and show you are better than the guys that are already there.

"Unfortunately for a goalkeeper there is only one spot. Maybe Celtic are looking at in terms of a succession plan and they are thinking 'maybe Joe will go at the end of the season'.

"They will want someone in the building, who is capable, and Benjamin Siegrist ticks those boxes."
