Benjamin Mendy signs for French club Lorient after not guilty verdict in rape retrial

Former Manchester City player Benjamin Mendy has returned to football with FC Lorient after being found not guilty of rape.

After almost two years out the game, the 29-year-old has passed a medical and signed a two-year contract at the French club.

Lorient, who finished 10th in Ligue 1 last season, have handed Mendy the No5 shirt after announcing his arrival on Wednesday.

The Frenchman won the World Cup in 2018 as well as three Premier League titles at City, before the treble-winners suspended him amid the charges filed against him.

City released Mendy following the expiration of his contract this summer.

Mendy was found not guilty of six counts of rape and one count of sexual assault in January before a retrial was ordered on a further count of rape and one of attempted rape due to the jury being unable to reach a verdict.

He was found not guilty of those charges last week.
