Benidorm actor is joining the cast of Coronation Street

Benidorm actor Tony Maudsley is joining the cast of Coronation Street.

Tony, who played Kenneth du Beke in the ITV comedy, will play Archie Shuttleworth's son in the long-running soap.

The actor announced he was exited to be joining his favourite show to fans on his Twitter account.

The 52-year-old actor wrote: "Yes I can indeed confirm this to be true.

"I’m chuffed to be staying at my @itv home and heading to Weatherfield and I for one, couldn’t be happier."

He added: "As a long time fan of @itvcorrie, I’m thrilled to be joining the cast of my favourite show. Here’s to the next exciting chapter."

Tony previously played the character Bailey in Corrie in 1995.

In 1998 he played Stefan Kiszko in the film A Life for a Life, about the innocent man wrongfully jailed in 1975 for killing 11-year-old Rochdale youngester Lesley Molseed.

He played Joshua in the BBC Radio 4 situation and appeared in the ITV series Doc Martin as a postman.

In 2016 he played Edna Turnblad in the touring musical Hairspray.

From 2011 until 2018, when the series was cancelled, Tony starred as hairdresser Kenneth in Benidorm.

The character of Archie Shuttleworth was played by Roy Hudd, who died last month aged 83.

Roy, who was awarded an OBE in 2004 for services to entertainment, passed away peacefully after a short illness.

His character Archie was an undertaker at Shuttleworth's Independent Funeral Directors on Tile Street.

He first appeared as Blanche Hunt's companion and always saw the good in the acid-tongued character who died in 2010.

In December 2018 Audrey Roberts received news that Archie had passed away and received £80,000 in his will.
