Bengaluru: Residents suffer as BWSSB work leaves road in bad shape

BENGALURU: Ayyappa Temple Street in Maruthi Enclave Layout, Kothanur, was not motorable in the best of conditions for over two years now. The stretch in north Bengaluru has now turned into a dirt track after BWSSB dug it up for laying pipes.

As motorists get stuck with the wheels sinking in on the slushy road, residents are clueless where to go for resolving their woes as the stretch is spread over two wards: While 300 metres of the road falls in Hoodi of Mahadevapura assembly constituency, the other 250 metres is under Horamavu, KR Puram.

Ayyappa Temple Street is lined up on either side by 100 households with close to 400 residents. They say most of the time, ward officials blame their counterparts in the other ward.

Femin Pamplany, who has been staying in the layout for 10 years now, said: “Accidents are common on this stretch. We raised the issue with local-level officers as well as the chief commissioner of BBMP, but there has been no response.”

DN Ravindranath, president of Maruthi Enclave Resident Welfare Association, said: “We have written to everyone including the engineers, BBMP chief commissioner and MLAs. We intend on meeting them to explain the poor condition of the road. Whenever it rains, water overflows onto the street as drains in the area have not been desilted for over a decade now. After it rains, it’s difficult for anyone to know where the potholes are.”

This apart, dust allergy rises during dry weather.

“At least 50% of the plots are occupied and the number of families will eventually increase. So the issues need to be sorted out at the earliest,” Femin said.

Mohammad Shaik, a Hoodi ward official, said: “BWSSB didn’t restore the street properly, hence it tends to sink when it rains. However, the budget for asphalting the part of road coming under Hoodi ward has been sanctioned and a tender called. The entire process might take another three months.”

Horamavu ward officials did not respond to calls.
