Bengals still expected to target veteran TEs in free agency

It’s taking much longer than expected, but the Cincinnati Bengals still figure to be active at tight end in free agency.

The team lost Hayden Hurst in the early goings and Drew Sample and Mitchell Wilcox remain on the open market. Given the dominoes to fall, it sure feels like the Bengals missed a chance to add a legit No. 1 at the position.

But there’s this nugget, from Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com: “It’s believed they’d like to also sign a veteran to pair with a rookie at tight end, but they’re looking for numbers to fit under a tightening salary cap.”

Granted, at this point, that could be something as small as bringing back Sample or Wilcox, if not both.

But it’s a small note that the team indeed has an eye on the market still and will find help before the draft. Something is better than nothing and, if there’s a positive, it’s that the approach to free agency so far has guaranteed the team can address pretty much any position it wants in the early rounds of the draft.
