The Cincinnati Bengals have made a strategic move by placing the franchise tag on star wide receiver Tee Higgins for a second time. This decision comes as the team aims to secure a long-term deal with the talented 26-year-old player.
If a contract agreement is not reached by July 15, Higgins is set to earn a salary of $26.2 million for the 2025 season. Bengals director of player personnel has emphasized the importance of finalizing a long-term deal with Higgins, expressing a strong desire to retain him on the team.
Higgins, known for his impressive performance on the field, was tied for sixth in the league last season with 10 touchdown catches. He recorded 73 receptions for 911 yards, averaging 12.5 yards per catch. One of his standout games was against Denver, where he secured 11 receptions for 131 yards and three touchdowns, including a crucial score in overtime.
Selected as a second-round pick by the Bengals in 2020, Higgins has consistently delivered strong performances, surpassing 900 receiving yards in four of his five seasons. He achieved over 1,000 yards in both the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Aside from Higgins, the Bengals are also focusing on contract extensions for other key players. All-Pro wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase is in line to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL after an exceptional season leading in receptions, receiving yards, and touchdown catches. Additionally, All-Pro edge rusher Trey Hendrickson, who topped the league with 17 1/2 sacks last season, is also in the final year of his contract.
The Bengals management is committed to retaining their top talent and building a competitive team. With a strong focus on managing the salary cap effectively, the team aims to reward their players for their contributions while continuing to strengthen the roster for future success.
As the Bengals navigate the offseason, negotiations with key players like Higgins, Chase, and Hendrickson are crucial steps in shaping the team's roster for the upcoming seasons.
