Bengals’ Joe Burrow tops NFL in unlucky interceptions, according to PFF

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has a reputation as a passer who doesn’t make many mistakes.

And there is certainly plenty of data to back that up.

For example, Gordon McGuinness of Pro Football Focus ranked the league leaders in “unlucky interceptions” since 2016, and Burrow slots at No. 1:

According to PFF grading and charting, just 12 of Burrow’s 35 interceptions have been deemed his fault. Seven have come from a combination of miscommunication, receivers stopping their routes and dropped passes, while 16 have been forced by the defense, either by coverage players breaking up a pass or pass-rushers hitting the Bengals signal-caller as he threw.

That means Burrow has more go wrong that’s out of his control than most other quarterbacks in the league recently. Only 12 of Burrow’s career 35 picks have been strictly his fault alone, according to PFF.

This isn’t a perfect way of looking at turnovers by a quarterback, of course, but it is one piece of a larger puzzle that continues to confirm Burrow is one of the league’s best at taking care of the ball.
