Bengals get it right by picking up Jonah Williams’ fifth-year option

The Cincinnati Bengals let the first round of the 2022 NFL draft pass before making a call on the fifth-year option of left tackle Jonah Williams.

Turns out it was the right call, too.

Not long before making the move, the Bengals had openly talked about how they were still weighing the decision. It went official on Friday, locking the 11th overall pick in 2019 in for the 2023 season at a $12.6 million cap hit.

The Bengals had until Monday to either extend Williams or pick up the option and they can still extend him now that he’s locked in through 2023.

Williams, still 24 years old, has been on an upswing lately but also still allowed eight sacks last year by PFF’s numbers.

The team might wait to see how other extension pieces (see: Joe Burrow) pan out alongside Williams’ development before making a call on a long-term extension.
