Ben Vellacott has 'unfinished business' at Edinburgh

Ben Vellacott feels like he has “unfinished business” with Edinburgh after agreeing a new contract.

The scrum-half, who joined the club ahead of the 2021/22 season, has signed a new two-year deal to remain with the capital club.

“I got approached at the end of pre-season about staying at the club and it was a pretty easy decision for me,” the co-captain said.

“I feel like there's unfinished business here with the group that we've got. We've got a lot of good young players coming through and the potential that we've got to go far is second to none.”

And despite a trophyless four years so far, the once-capped Scotland international hopes to get his hands on silverware during his time at Hive Stadium.

"I came here with a purpose four years ago and I'm still here with that purpose. And like I said, we've got some really good young players.

“We've obviously got some of the older boys sticking around, which is good, so if we can keep that core group together we're going to go far.”

Vellacott has had to be patient this season, with Ali Price regularly preferred as the number one choice at scrum-half, but with British and Irish Lion Price reportedly on his way out of Edinburgh at the end of the season, Vellacott could be Sean Everitt’s go-to man.

“I’ve had to bide my time a little bit this season in terms of opportunities. It’s been a bit of a stop-start with injuries, which has been frustrating.

“But we’re coming into the business end of the season now, so if I can stay fit, put in some good performances and hopefully we're at the right side of the table.”

And Vellacott, 29, hopes to continue developing his own game over the next two years.

“At this time in my career, I think the big thing for me is trying to help the younger lads coming through.

“We've got a really good young group of nines coming through. So for me, it’s about trying to help them develop as much as possible and help the next generation because at the end of the day, you're only realistically holding the nine shirt for a very short period of time before the next nine comes through. So if I can help them….

“But at the same time, my goal here is to win silverware. So if we can get ourselves into the top eight or top four in the URC, then we put ourselves in good contention.

“And obviously, we're going into the knockout rounds of Europe in a few weeks. So again, that's a good chance to win some silverware.”

The former Gloucester and Wasps man won his solitary Scotland cap to date against Italy in Rome three years ago, and said adding to his tally remains in the back of his mind.

"You've got to perform for your club,” he added.

“Whatever they want to do and kind of how they're performing is what they want to do at the end of the day. As long as I put in some good performances here, then maybe.”

Meanwhile, Edinburgh have also confirmed they have signed Stirling County wing Ross McKnight on a short-term deal.

McKnight scored a hat-trick in the friendly defeat to Saracens last weekend and will link up with the squad for a month-long trial.

Head coach Sean Everitt said: “We'll see how goes and how he can improve.

“Obviously, a month is a short time, so you're not expecting miracles, but it's a good opportunity for him to grow as a player and obviously for us to see what he can do.”
